I just noticed that the newest Tesla station up in the NH mountains is 5 minutes from the area I'm looking at buying property up there! Sweet!

Why wouldn't you put in the bedside near the taillight? Anywhere in the tailgate is a non-starter IMO.
Im not all that tall, so I can see that being a pain to reach into to plug it in. Dropping the tailgate also wouldn’t be an option as we would be pulled up close to the charger.

I was thinking reaching the top of the tailgate is much easier but that also has its issues with those who use bed caps so it’s unlikely to be done.

I would think any real solution would be one that requires minimal retooling by Ford so unlikely any sheet metal changes. I would also assume to keep wiring relatively similar it would still be driver side front. That limits the options to really only changing the hood/grill area.

The reality is we will likely not see it on our current design.

I don't see why it would have to be high if it was in the bedside. It would be lower than the current charge port based on the space available on the existing body panel. I'd have it about a foot below the Lightning logo.

EDIT: We definitely won't see a change in the current truck. This is all hypothetical. I assume this has been considered on the new gen truck.

Would your property have electricity?

So someone please enlighten me,I understand the Magic Dock theory but if the vehicle’s software has to be updated to use Tesla chargers what vehicles are using the Magic Dock now?

I'm not sure why that's relevant. Being 5 minutes from a DCFC is incredibly convenient.

When you say bedside, I assumed you meant inside the bed. But when you said Lightning logo…do you just mean on the outside of the bed?

If so, that’s certainly a possibility which another poster listed and I was replying to.

It never hurts to have one close, especially if you lose power for an extended period of time but I have a second property that have been traveling to a lot in the past year and have never needed a DCFC near it. I charge at home before I leave and charge when I get there at a fraction of the price of DCFC. I much rather have more reliable DCFCs between my departure and destination than at either end. Unless I don’t have access to L2 charging at the destination.

Magic docks are already programmed by Tesla to be open. You just have to activate them through the Tesla app. The software update for the vehicle that people are talking about would be to make them work with plug&charge. Tesla could enable all v3s to work with an adapter by updating their SCs, or maybe it only requires a server to give the OK.

If it was desired, there’s a more options..

1) Inside the bed, the worst option possible.

2) Into the bumper. Expand the trailer pin slot to also accommodate a charge port door as well.

3) Into the tailgate. Flap door next to the tailgate step for a vertical plug in.

As a truck I prefer to back into the charger but Ford may have intentionally placed it up front to accommodate charging with something in tow.

4) The Ford logo is large enough, perhaps a flip up logo with the connector underneath it.
Yeah, please no back in.

There is new information on the A2Z website. The website now says shipping of the adapters will start on the 5th of January, shipping will be from Montreal, Canada and the adapters will work with V3 and V4 Tesla Superchargers. Maybe we will get some official word soon from Ford or Tesla on when the Superchargers will open up.

No software is required - you can use the magic docks right now with the Lightning. You have to initiate the charging station through the Tesla app currently.

Still bugs me that they don’t mention these do not work for Tesla SC’s at the moment unless you click on the fine print link. Wonder how many people will buy them and immediately try them out.
Actually won’t have to wonder; they will show up here asking.

Nothing needs to be done with the vehicle's software. Majic Dock simple includes a CSS connector in addition to the NACS connector. Currently All CSS equipped vehicles can use a Magic Dock.

You just need to install the Tesla APP on your smartphone, create an account to be billed and use the APP to activate the charger.
