Ford Charge Station Pro - Newb Question

I do not want to add a 100AMP breaker to my panel. Instead, I’d like to get a 50AMP breaker and charge at 40AMPs.

Can a 6/2 be used in this conifugarion with this charger?

Yes. 6/2 romex will give you 55 amps capacity. Plenty for 40 amps continuous load.

You *can* but you'd probably be better off selling the FCSP and buying a charger rated for the wires you're running since you'd be running it at half its potential... there's always the potential for someone else to come along and turn that FCSP up to 80A not realizing the downgraded install... if you do choose to install FCSP this way, I'd suggest stickering it with a label explaining what you've done to avoid this.

If you run 4-2, you can step up to an 80A breaker, and then derate the FCSP to 64A. I would not sell the Ford -- as much as some folks have had trouble, most people get the kinks worked out. Is there a reason you don't want the full 80A? Afraid you would overload your main panel? I cannot think of any other reason. If you have an existing 6-2 wire to a decent location, that would be a good reason too I guess.

It is derated via a dial selector buried inside the case. No one will accidentally change that setting without being knowledgeable enough to trust themselves with opening the case and messing with the internals. Not likely. Label is of course not a bad idea.

Faster charging is nice.

I would sell the Ford charger and buy a $595 Tesla Universal Wall connector https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tesla-...er-up-to-48a-24-white/6557478.p?skuId=6557478 hard wired to a 60 amp breaker. It will support up to 48 amps 11.7 kws. It has both the J1772 and Tesla NACS connectors for future proofing since it seems everyone is going to the Tesla connector.

if you are limited to 50 amps you can configure it as such to output 40 amps 9.6 kws.

It has. 4 year warranty and the cable is 24 feet long and thin.

I don't have the install manual in front of me but I believe Ford calls for 3g wire not 4... I'm pretty confident of this because my guy couldn't source 3g so mine's running on (more expensive) 2g. Nothing wrong with oversizing wire, just don't want to undersize.

I thought I read copper 2awg in the sunrun manual. 8awg for ground. 1" conduit.

In any event I bought 20' of copper 2awg THHN for my install. $2.07/ ft.

I'm still waiting for Sunrun to deliver it.

Been using my juicebox. It is connected to a Eaton NEMA outdoor 14-50 recepitcal, using 6awg to a 50A breaker.

The “Pro” charger has different lugs capable of accepting #2. The FCSP is only rated for #3 max. You can transition to #3 in a j-box or disconnect near the EVSE.

I ran #1 aluminum 90’ to my disconnect, then a foot or so of #3 copper to the FCSP. Saved me over $200 in wire cost.

That's interesting! It is a different charger, but does appear to be the same amperage. As far as I know, 3g is rated for 100A and 2g is rated for 115A so slightly overkill here. As I mentioned, 3g is somewhat rare compared to 2g or 4g so perhaps Ford was being more realistic about what an end user could reasonably find locally... either way, better to have larger wire than wires too small!
