I was under the impression that heat pumps were really only advantageous at moderately cool temps around freezing and actually struggled to keep up at really low temperatures (<0 F). Am I miss informed?

I don't think a heat pump is about saving money but having better range in the freezing cold. Until someone compares a 2023 to a 2024 Lightning on a 0F day we won't know what the resistance heater range penalty is.
Yeah I don’t care too much about cost savings from efficiency but definitely care about potential range increases.

I know some residential mini splits work well down to -15F. Who knows how well the Lightning will work. I haven't looked at how well EVs with heat pumps perform in the bitter cold, off to google...

Those were older heat pumps. My residential one works below 0F. Efficiency drops, but it’s able to move heat still.

On a vehicle, this also changes based on engineering design. As we move, charge, etc we generate heat. That heat can be extracted vs attempting to extract it from ambient air temp as well.

I guess things have changed with the technology but still their efficiency gains diminish as it gets cooler. If it was a meaningful gain I am sure Ford would happily advertise it as such. Didnt Ford add heated seats to all trims in 2023 so they could claim a 10 mile range increase?

I would go with the '23. Heat pumps are not simple things, I used to think it was just a valve in a normal air conditioner but there are complications. I would be pleasantly surprised if Ford managed to do the heat pump roll out without a few recalls along the way.

You need the Pro Power on board, you just don't know what for yet. My wife grilled sandwiches on the tailgate at a lake recently. On youtube, a guy cooked pizzas in a portable oven while on a long road trip. I will be using it for my miter saw on a part of my property that doesn't have power. You might need to run a pump somewhere, or keep your refrigerator going during a power outage, or make hot coffee on a cold day - there is so much more you can do with it than a regular car's inverter. It hardly affects range.

$5000 / $.075 = 66,667 kWh

66,667 kWh / 131 kW = 508.9

You would have to fully charge your truck, from 0% to 100%, 509 times before you start saving money with the truck that has the heat pump. And that doesn't include all the other goodies it has.

I know what I would do.
Since we're talking Pro trim, it should be:
66,667 kWh / 98 kW = 680.3

The heat pumps likely take care of 99% of the use cases in the US and Canada, but most here wanted to diss it pretty bad when Tesla added it and had some news reports of it not taking care of the car in cold climate. I'm sure the technology is vastly improved and works 100% of the time now that Ford is using it.

So truly it's up to you and your use case and if you are a Tesla fan or not.

Good point. I forgot we're talking about a SR truck. Makes the '23 look even better.

A heat pump is not a miracle to our range impact in winter. You should plan on 30-40% reduction to advertised range. Real world range is almost impossible to get even out of winter. You will be in very low m/kwh. Plug the truck in every night, charge to 100% and set departure times when possible to warm up the cabin and battery.

Between the two, I would pick the 23, those other features are very useful, especially PPOB.

There's a thread in this forum where someone added a diesel fuel heater modification to replace their resistive electric heating. This would give you even better range boost than the heat pump as it's a separate system for heat. If I had your choice and lived where it's cold, this would be how I'd go.

Thanks again everyone for your input!

2023 Pro secured!

Less than 12 hours in but, yes, 360 cam is a game changer as you all suggested! And uhhh why is my truck one of those launching rollercoasters everyone I push the pedal?? ;)
