So people who have submitted their taxes aren't getting their EV tax credit if the dealership didn't provide the paperwork or submit the VIN in 3 days. Multiple people on reddit have posted and confirmed. Dealership screwed me and a bunch of other people out of $7500 by not submitting the VIN to the IRS within 3 days. The IRS guidance originally said to email the IRS but now it just says we're out of luck if they didn't submit it.

I'm going to try contacting my congressman about it and see if anything can be done. What sucks is that I did everything right and was at the mercy of the dealership even though I've tried to contact them and warn them and asked them to do it because they opened the window in December for dealerships to submit late VIN numbers. I even emailed the IRS months ago and barely got a response from them on what to do.

That seems kind of wonky that the dealer only had 72 hours to submit the VIN. Heck it took longer for my dealer to submit my license plate and registration paperwork to the state.

granted I bought my Lariat n September 2023 and I paid cash. My dealer never heard of such paperwork. I got my rebate last year simply by filling out form 8936 and entering my VIN.

That was correct for 2023. They changed it in 2024.

I would love to see an official IRS communication, to a taxpayer, showing denial of the credit.

Per IRS website:

"At the time of sale, a seller must give you information about your vehicle's qualifications. Sellers must also register online and report the same information to the IRS. If they don't, your vehicle won't be eligible for the credit. For more information see Publication 5905, Information for Consumers Purchasing a New or Used Clean Vehicle PDF."

Multiple people on reddit have posted and confirmed.
Did they post screenshots of exactly where/when the problem occurs.
  • Original entry into commercial online filing systems?
  • Post submission E-File rejection?
  • Return posted and refund reduced, with an IRS explanation letter?
  • Any appeal rights with the denial communication?

I'd love to understand what stage this is occurring.

I feared this would be a problem, and now there needs to be an alternate solution, where someone with 'common sense' has administrative authority to grant the credit.

@Ford Motor Company you MUST suspend delivery of BEV products to dealers that REFUSE to enroll in the POS credit process.

I'm feeling nervous... Have taxes nearly done using freetaxusa. Will report back after filing. The dealership talked about providing the paperwork but I don't have a copy and it's not listed in the docs I have to submit with my return.

There is no documentation from the dealership that you submit with your return. None. You simply fill out your tax return with the information requested, which should have been provided by the dealership.

The point of sale credit transfer & verification of eligible BEV's began January 1st 2024, your transaction was not affected by the newer business process.

AGAIN

I Strongly encourage potential buyers ONLY deal with dealers who can offer an immediate POS credit upon delivery of the vehicle. That would be a clear sign they are enrolled and compliant with the new process.
