Thanksgiving trip preparation this morning including departure time precondition

The actuals, cabin temp ~75°
Blue Cruise setting at 66 MPH mostly highway

Used 69% of 131 kWh ~= 90.39 kWh
Traveled 158.5 miles with 90.39 kWh = 1.75 MPK {mi/kWh}
At that pace driving to zero, (not that I would) remaining capacity 40.61 kWh goes 71 miles
Real life range per my style and operating conditions ~230 miles

That's the reality for me.

Range figures must reflect typical worst case scenarios that are likely to occur during ownership becaues that's the figure customers are using to determine if it will work for them.

So, the range provided should be the 80%-20%, at 85 mph, in a headwind, during a cold snap of -5f, with a pregnant wife who likes 75f, and driving uphill?


Yeah, the way the numbers are calculated sucks, but that is the EPA testing.

The numbers suck, I totally agree, but using the same system and just making it "aweful" out is just bias of the numbers the other way.

Maybe the way is a consumption matrix, not range. Show how much energy is consumed at 45, 55, 65, and 75. Then show how much it gets modified by temps at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120.

The map display of the area you can cover is the thing. More tediously, between chosen points, you can find out similar info with ABRP.

What would be great with the Ford map, @Ford Motor Company, would be if you could add further filtering conditions for people like me, e.g., where can I go round-trip using the 80% to 20% SOC range without having to worry about charging to make it back to where I started.

I see they do have the round-trip option, just not the opportunity to specify how much battery % SOC you want to use...

If you are doing a RT, charge to 100%. ABRP plans it fine.

I haven't charged to 100% since the day I got the truck - then it said 250 miles if I am not mistaken.

I usually just charge to no more that 90% (usually 80%) and I see anywhere from 200 (80%) to 220 (90%) miles guestimated range in my 2023 F-150 Lightning Pro with the SR battery.

An inexact science in a vehicle...the bench test may give the 131kWh capacity for a representative battery pack (with some head room above that) but in a vehicle harder to nail down using things like the terminal voltage method or the current resistance charge/discharge method...sort of like trying to know the position and momentum of a particle simultaneously in physics - measure one and you change the other.

But if you see a large discrepancy from the expected number, could be a sign of trouble - early degradation, bad cells, other esoteric issues.

The EPA rated range is achievable in good weather (50-90), flat terrain, under 60mph. If any of those conditions are not met, expect less. As with ICE, a lead foot will also result in lower efficiency.

But, driving responsibly around town at 35 to 45 miles an hour will get you 350 or more miles out of a charge. It has happened to me.

Agreed, my daily commute is mostly city (45-50mph limit) and I average 2.7mpk
2.7 mi/kW * 131 kW = 353.7 miles range

This is why the Lighting is designed as a daily commuter, not for trips or highway travel. Like the truck a lot but wish it had better range, when we travel we rent a vehicle, planning routes on charge points and timing isn’t worth the headache, if you’re traveling, save yourself stress and frustration and get a rental.

We've taken the Lightning on a few road trips and I love it. Sure it's easier to put gas in a vehicle, but follow the rule of don't fast charge passed 80% and it's really manageable. I've never spent more than 25 minutes or so on a fast charger, pretty much by the time my wife and kids go to the bathroom and we get coffee or food she's ready for another round. I'm only averaging about 2-2.2 mi/kw this time of year and we don't micromanage the heat. I can also recommend the A2Z Typhoon Pro Tesla adapter. I've been getting up to 186kw/hr out of the latest Tesla stations.

I generally get about the same when the weather is moderate, significantly less in really cold weather, and slightly less in hot weather.

I assume the range number guess we see on the dash is if we went from 100% down to 0% charge, which nobody in their right mind does on purpose.

I work out my range from the assumption of going from 80% down to no less than 40% (or at worst down to 30%) for optimal lifespan, because "they" say a discharge of more than 50% is a significant factor in life span for Li battery capacity.

My goal is capacity/life-span extension, rather than range maximization. I generally try to keep vehicles as long as possible, which is always beyond the warranty expiration date.

Assuming a 2% capacity loss per year due to normal capacity loss from aging, I believe the Lightning will still be adequate for more than 10 years for my purposes, based on the way I drive and treat vehicles.

When the cost of ownership of an EV is so economical, I want to keep it as long as possible to maximize the benefit received.
