Trucks won’t ever be there , durability is far more important in a pickup than a Porsche , Battery pack on the Porsche is just like its gas engines , very high output and short life . Our pickups are built to last not go and charge fast , just my .02c👍
I think new tech will make charging times shorter, and shorter.

Hyundai's have a pretty fast charging time.
I have seen it when I have been at a DCFC. They come in while I am charging, plug in, and leave before I do....

I think the point is, we don't know yet if that will have long term impacts on battery health. Ford charging rates are definitely on the conservative side, I would assume for that reason.

Back on topic... what is the source for that Cybertruck sales number in the original post? I've only seen Tesla numbers that lump it in with the S and X, not broken out separately.

I think it was Dalton Brewer on X (he is a big Tesla contributor)

Historical 5 Tesla owner (S,S,S,X,Y) dating back to 2012 and CyberBeast reservation holder (cancelled both that I had).
Bought a Ford Lightning Platinum for me and Model X for the wife:
Why did Ford exceed sales?
1. Zero% financing for 60 months
2. CarPlay with in dash Waze, hell last night I was able to use a on screen police scanner when my neighbors house had several cops there (you can't do that in a Tesla)
3. Free install of high power wall charger
4. Potential for $10K to $20K price reduction depending on the model you bought
5. 1000's of aftermarket add-ons built for Ford F-150
6. Interior is gorgeous
7. Massive Sunroof
8. Frunk that is cavernous
9. Ride is super quiet and this truck is fast for a 8600 lbs GVWR.
10. Wife wants the same form factor with and SUV and would dump the X
11. Massaging Seats, Active running boards, BUTTONS and STALKS and a VOLUME KNOB!!!!!!!
12. 14 cup holders
13. Desktop table in center console
14. integrated hotspot
15. BlueCruise
16. Clandestine EV, verses CT "statement", I would be OK with the statement if it met all the design goals (500 mile range etc), but it didn't.
17. Plan to pickup a CT used for $35K in a year or so.

Just those 2 factors were the tipping point for me. I use my truck for many different activities, and the frunk comes in so handy. So handy. Meanwhile, the frunk of the CT is not that useful.

And the interiors. There is no comparison. Not even close.

I am fan of both Tesla and Ford's EVs.

Although I will say Tesla fan boys said Tesla would sell 250,000 Cybertrucks the first year. Then get to 500,000.

I don't know if they will ever break the 100,000 unit mark in a given year.
(Unless they have magic dust to bring the price down another $15,000 dollars)

The CT was never on our purchase horizon and the one individual I knew who was interested changed her mind when it rolled out. She’s a Tesla owner, but I was surprised when she said “I’m not into that level of exhibitionism”. Thus EM’s apocalyptic influencer based look-at-me strategy over selling & under-delivering “the future” becomes… “unh, seen that before”.

And he wants the same rubes to board a “starship”.

Meanwhile, I commute 90-100 miles a day in complete serenity, charge up 30-40 KWH every weekday night on .06$/kwh power & happy as a clam at high tide.

I’m sitting at the Ford Dealer portal entrance and a couple walks up and the gal grills me on the LT after her eyes do a once-over and land on the “Lightning” emblem. I’m straight up with why we like it “ride, color, features, etc” She sighed and said “We want one, hard to find”. Price wasn’t an issue. My take is wannabe CT owners are taking a 2nd look at the F150, Rivian, and the price conscious at Hyundai et al. Tesla could be squeezed from two sides on better value & utility. A Maverick EV is the sweet sauce. There’s a 3rd group of “Wait and See” and they are turned off now at the CT and are looking hard at the Lightning, perhaps Rivian.

The Ford Lightning out sold the Cybertruck in the 4th Quarter.

(This is despite all the Tesla message boards saying the Cybertruck is going to outsell the F150)

Hmmm.

FYI The Lightning sold 10,703 in Q4.
The Cybertruck sold 9,600 in the 4th Quarter.
Folks, the Lightning is a real truck. It does the work you expect, it hauls and takes into the woods in class, style and convenience. It is a truck, period.
Although I have a reservation for a sybertruck and I was about to buy it, Ford offered me a truck I couldn’t resist or turn down. Still love the truck.
I am not putting down the cybertruck but I couldn’t see the upside to purchase one. So….I am all in for the Lightning.!!!!!

Yep. The Cyberyuk is definitely a "look at me" status symbol first and foremost. To me it's not the vehicle for regular folks, but then the CEO isn't regular folk and has no clue what most people want or need.

I hope Ford (or any EV maker to be honest) can improve their charging to match the Taycan.

That would make a big difference in the ownership experience of an EV.
IMHO charging improvements has it's limits and we already know the side effects of it on battery life the faster you charge.
The future is swappable battery. You the owner should never own the battery, you are just rending it to consume. Like how you fill the gas in your ICE.
Battery swap stations like gas stations. Where you just pull, swap the battery in few seconds and you are out.

I think the window to do battery swapping in the US has passed.

If Auto makers started now, it would take 5 years to get a toe hold in the industry.

I don't think the idea of battery swapping sounds likely. We're talking about huge battery packs and there's just too many safety issues and development costs that would prohibit the major changes required to pull that off anytime soon. Incremental to moderate improvements to battery efficiency, lower component costs and speeding up charge rates are the direction to keep going if we want to see EV sales increasing to mainstream acceptance of BEV's. Just my thoughts.

Charging while going down the interstate might be an option someday. Battery could be much smaller. But trucks are used off the main highways quite a bit, so that has to go into the calculations. But US gov will be restricted on financing innovations, so it will be up to the billionaire techies to lead the way?
