I’ve had 2 instances of spontaneous explosion of auto glass. Once when driving a rear window exploded. I thought we got shot. I called police and there was noting that hit the window.

Another time my back window on the rear hatch of my Expedition exploded. Car was out of warranty. State Farm covered both claims without issue. Florida has zero deductible compensation claim for window breakage.

Not uncommon but it happens. https://www.libertyautoglass.us/aut...o Glass, auto glass during tempering processes.

My first car had the back window collapse in when I got in and closed the door. No idea if it had already been cracked or exploded prior to getting in. Never found a rock or anything else to explain why. I always just assumed a neighborhood kid accidentally broke it and ran away. This thread is the first time I've heard of glass spontaneously exploding. Makes me wonder if that happened to me.

Because glass doesn't spontaneously explode. Very small unnoticed fractures, strain and temperature differential will cause it to shatter. Inconsistencies and inclusions in the glass from manufacturing can also cause strain on the glass.

Great advice! LHM in Salt Lake wasn't much help. My insurance wants a $500 deductible, so Provo seems like a better option. Thanks!
And be careful with insurance. These days I try to avoid any claims since that will give them an excuse to raise rates. I save my insurance for an accident.

Check with your agent, many insurance companies do not up your rates for a Comprehensive Insurance claim, which in this situation it would be. In a few states it's even illegal for them to up your rates for a not-at-fault claim.

My wife submarined her car about a year ago and hydro-locked the engine. Since she drove it into the high water, I assumed that it would be covered under collision covereage. Safeco wrote it up as comprehensive, wrote us the check, and our rates have not increased.

Some insurance companies now consider damage that was the result of any exterior contact to be collision. (Because something collided with the vehicle)

Yeah. I’d like to think that’s the case. But I called AAA here in Michigan and was told there is no way to be able to tell if a claim even for comprehensive w/glass coverage would cause a rate increase until a claim is filed. I don’t like that answer but they have the absolute best rates here for us so I deal with it. We get absolutely fucked on auto insurance here. I love this state but our auto insurance is crap. I think a lot of it has to do with us being no fault. 🙄
