Just did back to back 1000 mile trips over the last weekend, here are the specs for tesla chargers (ABRP used for planning).

Average speed=124.7kw
Average kwh=67.97
Average time=33.8 minutes
Average cost=38 cents per kwh

Min/max speed=67/139.2 kw
Min/max kwh=41.5/88
Min/max time=18/47 minute
Min/max cost=$0.36/$0.43

This was the 10 tesla stops, which was 90% of the charging. Trip was across Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota (and then back).

I just hit a supercharger close to me to juice up a little before heading up to the ski hill. I pulled in at 40% and got to 60% in 10 minutes for an average of 174kW with peak rate at 188kW. That was by far the best charging session I’ve had. It didn’t drop below 150 for the entire 10 minutes but it was tailing off and would’ve been below 150 shortly after that if I had kept charging.

I had a poor charge in Scottsdale. I definitely did not get the full rate.

I have had good luck elsewhere, so hoping that's a one off.

Is there something different about Superchargers? I've never seen over 167kW on any EA station and I've used many of the 350kW stations (350A and 500A). Why is the SC able to get to almost 190kW? Better cooling? More overhead on the amperage output? There has to be something different about it. 20+kW is a huge difference.

You should get the same on an EA 350 v a Supercharger due the 500amp boost. Max will obviously depend on current SOC, battery temp, DCFC derating, etc.

The average power I get from a SC is the same as the average power I get from most other DCFCs.

Ratings and reality are always different. I've never heard of anyone getting over 180kW on an EA charger with the Lightning. Early on there were many, many people reporting the 500A units were topping out around 165-170, maybe low 170s. I've seen it myself on several different stations over the years. The conditions and beginning SoC were definitely optimized in this session but going 20kW over anything I've ever seen before is not likely simply due to charging conditions.

Do you record the peak charge rate?

Very rarely. It's not something that's easily extracted from the FordPass app and I've been having issues with the EA app not giving me my data. I don't know if the T app includes it. Finally, I only sometimes remember to turn on CarScanner.

I don't trust my own eyewitness accounting since I rarely stay at the charger after confirming that the charge has started. My "feeling" of what the peaks are is similar for both. I think it's important to distinguish between "peak" and "spike." A peak should last at least a minute or two to be considered valid. A spike lasts less than a minute and may be a spurious data point for all the good it does for charging the vehicle.

To me the peak is a meaningless number unless I'm only charging for 5 to 10 minutes, and I've only once done that (out of hundreds of DCFCs). I have a record of charging at a T charger for 9 minutes. In those 9 minutes the charger added 25 kWh for a 167 kW average. There was a very short spike to about 170 kW. We unplugged at 49% SoC, so this was in the sweet spot range of highest charge rates.

If you have ABRP and a bluetooth dongle, you can record the charging curve and download it. Would be nice if it had battery temp and voltage. Believe it was in the 30's this day with no preconditioning as I stopped by the supercharger to kill time.

I've hit 188kW and 178kW max on a newer EA charger in Kingston NY. It lasted a few minutes at most. Still took 28 minutes to go from 49% to 85%, tanking down to 60ish kW at 80%, so still followed the charge curve. Warm battery and a cold day!

I'm curious if we get an improved charge curve at some point. I don't recall anyone topping 175kW when I was following this closely.

EDIT: This is from @tommolog original charign test report. He never saw over 170kW even when starting the charge at multiple different SoC. 40% and 50% had the best peak rates.

EDIT #2: Here's a more recent thread showing a 195kW charging rate on an EA station.

Now I feel like we have to have a competition for the first verified 200kW charge rate. 😄
