Tesla wall charger with 80 amp Tesla Tap - tripping 40 amp breaker

I’ll start by saying I come from the natural gas industry and know little about electrical.

I have a Tesla wall charger and a 80 amp Tesla Tap adapter. After around 10 min of charging my lighting with this setup my 40 amp breaker pops.

Truck drawing too much and wires on the charger and house getting too hot?
80 amp adapter and 40 amp breaker definitely not a compatible combo?

Any help would be appreciated.

Interesting. So, your Tesla wallbox is rated at 40A? Normally the wallbox would tell the truck it can only provide 40A and that would be the maximum current draw the truck would ask for. UNLESS, the 80A tesla tap is overriding the wallbox current message and is telling the truck it can provide 80A, in which case the truck would ask for 80A and it would pop the breaker. Certainly worth more research to see if that is the case. But leave it for the professionals to test. You don't want to keep popping breakers until your house burns down.

There are only a few EVs that can draw 80A AC, so you may be the first to have "discovered" this little flaw. It would be a bummer to plug your Lightning in to a 40A Tesla destination charger at a hotel, using your 80A tap, only to discover the next morning that your truck tripped the hotel breaker and didn't charge at all.

Yet another reason why Ford Sync software should allow you to set an amperage limit for AC charging.

After issues yesterday I tried it again tonight. Currently at 26 min no issues. Fingers crossed it was just a fluke. Would still appreciate feedback if anyone sees something wrong with my in the meantime set. Thanks

80A teslatap would not cause a problem. You have a 40A breaker. What is you wall connector set at? With 40A breaker, it should be set to no more than 32A. Anything higher would cause problems.

If your wall connector is 40A, you should have a 50A breaker (and appropriate wire to go with it).

If it blowing the breaker than the setting in the Tesla Wall connector is set wrong.
The way it works is when the Wall Connector is installed the installer sets the breaker size so that the Wall Connector can tell the EV how many AMPS the EV can pull through the Pilot signal.
The TeslaTap adapter just passes that information to the EV.
Whoever installed the Wall Connector probably forgot to set it correctly.

If it really is an improperly installed 80A HPWC, Lightning could be the first vehicle ever to send a request for the full power rating of the EVSE.

Im not sure what the problem was on my first attempt but since then I have charged with zero issues. Attached photo shows last charging stats.

yup your wall charger is rated for more than your breaker.

same here we have a juicebox 80 amp charger, never a problem with our pacifica that probably pulls 20 amps. But the lighting pops the 50 amp breaker. I am sure I can change the max output in the juicebox wall charger, but have not bothered to connect it to wifi and log in I just charge the lightning with the supplied level 2 plugged into a 50 amp dryer circuit. It charges fine for me in the 6 hours of $.06 discounted ev rate my local utility gives us.

Sorry I just went out and checked my juicebox is a pro 40 model and my 50 amp breaker pops when the lighting is plugged in so I guess the wall charger is letting it pull more than 50 amps. So I guess I am in the same boat....

So I guess my wall charger is not functioning correctly? I think this is our second juicebox....

I also have a juicebox 40 amp charger on a 60 amp circuit breaker to charger my lightning. Since charging is the least expensive for me during 12am-3pm everyday, that’s when I charge my lightning. My circuit breaker has not pop yet since charging the lightning.

I suggest that you go to the juicebox setting and set it to 40 amp and then go to your lightning setting screen and also set that also at 40 amp. Do that and see if that will work for you when charging the lightning.
