When the Bolt EV first came I tried to lease one. GM was only offering $2,500 of the $7,500 tax credit on the lease and justified it by saying they raised the residual value. Just saying, with an up front credit dealers can and will play games with the credit.

I wish Congress would just tell me what truck I’m buying already. Not buying anything I’m not getting the full tax credit on, not at this stage of EV adoption/my income at least.

Likely he’s a speculator and what Greene wants is a point-of-sale subsidy rather than a tax credit. That way he can leave his EV certified Ford dealer and stop at Carmax, Carvanna, etc. for multiple offers on the drive home.

Then list it on eBay if necessary and flip his Lightning for the highest offer, hoping to pocket at least $12,500.00 cash in the process.

Edited to add: I can’t help but wonder how many of the 160K reservation holders are speculators. No intention of keeping the Lightning but rather turning it for a quick profit.
This is hard when you have to pay sales tax. (but in at least my state you dont pay sales tax on EVss so maybe there is some opportunity.

I'll be honest, if I decide I really don't want to afford it or if the explorer gets announced (and meets my needs better) too late in the process. I'll buy the lightning and I'm most certainly not going to lose money selling it within the first year or so. If I don't cancel my order I would much rather make money selling it myself than let the dealer profit from my abandoned order.

On a serious note, that will be something to discuss with the dealer when you order. Work your price(hopefully MSRP) and make it clear YOU(customer) keeps all rebates OR the FULL rebate will be taken off the purchase price (MSRP- EV credit). No funny business.

It was pretty crappy that gm structured it that way. Of course with the new EVs from Ford, they aren't even offering a traditional lease so there's no way for someone without the tax liability to hope to even the full credit.
I almost leased a leaf back in 2014 when you could get one for $200 a month or less in some areas. Nissan passes the whole amount to the buyer in their lease. Unfortunately I was driving almost 90 miles a day to get to work and back so the range just wasn't where I needed it to be.

Today the BBB EV Credit is collapsing. Scores of world countries have sent a warning letter to Lawmakers threatening legal action if they do not make changes in the "Union-Only" provisions.

The Rules Committee, which was to meet today to ok the final version, now, will not meet while language is changed. Hopefully, they will delete the Union language and open to all manufacturers, lower the rebate/tax credit costs, and give staffers more time to write a less biased version that can pass Congress.

OK - Now what happen? File this under Predictions.

Dems have too many other last minute battles to fight.

They will drop everything except reauthorizing the $7,500 for all manufacturers, changing it to rebate in 2023, and dropping the max MSRP limits for now because they were never going to be easily enforceable by IRS. Overall, the total price tag will remain the same and Mexico, Canada, Ford, GM, and Tesla will be happy.

It really does not matter to me because I am lucky enough to be able to use the full 2022 tax credit and order the trim I really want without having to play the political numbers game.

My hope is that if it stays the $7500 they'll make it refundable for 2022 purchases.

I wonder? All this speculation, I’m still gonna buy the Lightning Pro even if there are NO TAX CREDITS. Why? Because it’s gonna save me a ton of money in the long run. Solar system charges my daily driver so I have $0 in fuel cost. Why in the world do I need a Platinum, or Lariat or even an XLT? I guess some folks can afford it and some can’t (like me). So , what would everyone do, if there weren’t no tax credits??????

For me the ev credit makes the jump to xlt er possible. I drive 140 miles round trip a day with a once a week 220 mile round trip I worry come winter the SR will be pushing the range a bit. I had planned on a fully loaded xlt but spent more on the wife’s car than planned…

Personally I am going XLT or Lariat because the Lightning will not only be my daily driver and truck to do truck things in, but also our family road trip vehicle, so I want the ER battery and some creature comforts. Credit vs. no credit could push me to Rivian, if I can figure out how to make the size work and some longer term quality reviews come back positive.

Just curious as to why you would move over to Rivian. To me, the Rivian seems like a smaller truck for more cost than the f150..even without the Tax credit factored in.

I guess if you want to go rock climbing its got that extreme 4x4 thing going...but the Ford seems more substantial to me in many ways.

Also...Rivian is first to market but I am wondering about their ability to drastically increase production. I don't have the same worry about Ford
