You can make things idiot-proof but the morons will defeat it.
An engineer I worked with said it this way: “I can design it idiot proof, but I can’t design it damned-fool idiot proof!”

"tries to pull 100 amps through a 60 amp breaker that the breaker trips"
One would hope that would be the case. It may be that the EVSE starts to ramp up. As it gets close to the 60A it could be that connections get hot. The spacing in the conduit is getting warm. Poof.

Not sure they will allow any more software changeable current EVSE's. Think I saw that in a NEC change.

Again. Using a 100A charger in place of a dedicated 32A device in my opinion is a bit silly but since the 100A has power out then until we find out it's exact wiring we can't say what it should be.

I am hoping Ford monitors this Forum and takes all these great comments into consideration before they start shipping the Ford Charge Station Pro in a couple of months.

See post 55. As long as the EVSE is capable of being restricted in the hardware to match the circuit it’s installed on, it’s NEC compliant and safe. I’ve looked at the changes for NEC 2023 and don’t recall seeing anything on this. Not saying I couldn’t have missed something!

I didn't say anything about a device that is contained within the EVSE used to regulate the output. I said they can't use software anymore to select current.

Everything To Know About The Siemens Ford Collaboration On F-150 Lightning Charge Station

This vehicle can provide up to 80 amperes, that's 19.2 kilowatts to an electric car, but it may also be rated to only twenty amperes, and that's 4.8 kilowatts. The charging point contains integrated dip switches that enable users to adjust the maximum amperage delivered from eighty to twenty amperes. This is beneficial if the residence in which it's being placed lacks the additional electrical capacity to accommodate the full 100 amperes dedicated circuit.

The pace at which the Ford F-150 lightning may charge is not directly proportional to the quantity of electricity available to the residence during a power failure. Even though the Charge Station Pro is throttled back to twenty amperes, it could still supply forty amperes to the house as needed. Ford hasn't announced the price for the Charge Station Pro, but this does come standard with the car, if it features the long-range battery pack.

Hopefully that info is correct.
"While charging a car, electricity is sent from the machine " Welcome to the machine.

"The charging point has a charging wire that is firmly attached and measures 80ft, or over nine meters." Worlds longest charge cord???

"Ford hasn't released pricing for the Charge Station Pro yet, but the charging station does come free with the vehicle if it has the extended range battery pack. We suspect the unit may retail for as much as $2,500 to $3,000, as other 80-amp charging stations that don't offer bidirectional capability often cost about $2,000."

Not sure about that.

In my best Mr Haney voice
Bidding for charge station pro starts at $2000.
Can I get $2000?
Who will open the bidding at $2000?
Come on, people, you know this is a steal at $2000.
Arnold, talk to these good people.

Am I misunderstanding this or is the author of that article?

Just saw the author’s name…

:)
Obviously, the author meant to say 9 Meters = 29.5276 FEET ("Over 9 Meters"). The cord is actually = 30 FEET. I think that day in 8th grade math where they were learning meters to feet conversions he was asleep. But we can be pretty sure he is not a European or Canadian.

As with any media post you have to take it all with a pound of salt and verify the detail with more than one source.

Is there such a thing as a EV charger that monitors amps at the mains and dials down the charger if total house usage approaches say 200 amps but lets charger rip at 80 amps if other house usage is low?

I have not seen this on the market...Yet! Might be two years (possibly more) out.
