With time, people will also realize they don’t really want a Pro. The F-150XL for the longest time started “Under $30,000” and I can’t recall the last time I saw one driven..really at all.

Retail customers weren’t buying them in droves. There’s plenty of opportunity for Ford (once established) to further de-content the Pro to make it more commercial focused and increase profits and/or drive demand to a higher XLT trim.

For anyone who’s upset about missing out on a Pro. Go test drive a ICE XL with vinyl seats and compare it to an XLT. Then ask yourself if you’d take a XL. Is the answer is of course, then you’re in the Pro market. If you’re finding the seats are just a tad uncomfortable, the seating position isn’t quite right, wondering if you’ll be too hot/cold on the vinyl, wishing it had a sunroof, think it’ll be better with power adjustable pedals, not quite fond of the vehicle without a light bar, or without body colored bumpers…etc etc. The Pro isn’t for you.

As a Pro holder there have been numerous occasions where I wondered if I should have stepped up or if I’ll end upgetting back in line to trade out of the Pro and into a Lariat.

For now this was supposed to be a dipping of the toe. The fastest, cheapest way to get these out was to keep them similar enough. It turned out the warmer is the perfect temperature for Ford. They're all in now, and I think they’ll make them..if you want them. I just don’t think most want them as much as they think they do.
The Pro gets a bit more than a base level ICE truck does though. And there isn’t enough in a XLT to justify the 13k price jump from a pro or a 30k jump to base Lariat IMO. If I couldn’t get the Pro and the rebates I likely wouldn’t have ordered a Lightning.

I think it depends on what you're comparing to. If you compare the Pro Lightning vs XLT Lightning, I think you're right, most people will eventually decide to bump up the trim level.

My decision to do a Pro instead of spending a bit more for the XLT SR was the price/value compared to an ICE F150 XLT. If you try to build an XLT SuperCrew Cab with 4x4 (selectable, not auto), built in navigation, etc. It's $52K or more; that doesn't even include power onboard. My Pro with Max Tow, Tow Tech, and bed liner came in a $46.

Will I miss my cloth seats in my '16 XLT? Maybe, I'm not really sure yet. Do I think I'll ever regret the trade? Probably not. Would I rather have a Lariat ER? Any day. But a $75K truck wasn't in the budget

It does, but I have to wonder if it's because of the speed to manufacture. Less variations is easier to pump out. For future years they will be faced with either increasing price, or reducing materials, or both. If they are already established, I wouldn't be surprised if the Pro gets more in line with the XL.

A base SuperCrew XL starts at $38,995. Add 4x4 and it's $44,865. That's proof that the Pro is better optioned than the XL....today. EV vs ICE.

But I think a large part of that is because it's cheaper for Ford to make them in this batch now, and it won't necessarily in the future. I also think Ford will try to keep the starting under $40k price and will have to make changes in order to do so. A single motor 4x2 Pro? Possible. Steel wheels? Possible.

So I get it, if I personally didn't have a Pro option I wouldn't have ordered at all. But I do think as these things ramp up in volume, it'll be more like for like. The future Pro could very well be de-optioned to the same level as the current XL. When/If that happens, will people still want the Pro?

Well if you're in California maybe we can do a trade once my turn comes up. Aside from the vinyl seats I don't need any bells and whistles. Seat covers are fine. I had a tacoma with hand crank windows. People laughed, but it worked for me.

Exactly. And for a lot less than that XLT you can do Katskin leather and seat warmers at least. I would love the signature lighting for sure but for something I can’t see when I drive it’s not worth the upcharge. They should just be on all lightnings. Power pedals and a more adjustable seat wouldn’t hurt my feelings but I haven’t had issues in my other vehicles so not worth much $$ to me personally.

You are right - for personal use, I'd opt for an XLT but in my case, only the Lariat was available.

OTOH our work organization only buys the XL base trim Ford vehicles for fleet use.
We are looking into ordering the Pro trim Lightnings and E Transit vans to replace our aging white fleet.
We have a FIN account as we buy our vehicles tax exempt from Ford directly with a dealer acting as a delivery receiver.
The dealer loves it because almost no work on them and gets paid to PDI them - they even deliver without plates because we get state exempt plates direct from DMV.

I didn't even know Katskins were a thing....that's going to be a must-have. My wife has been giving me grief for 5 years about not having heated seats on my XLT.

You can do heated seats on the Vinyl with some $120 heating pads and a self install too if you don’t want a seat material upgrade. Think katskin will even do heated/cooled seats.

I'm still waiting for an order spot for the lightning pro. The dealer just called to offer a test drive since my order is getting close. The emails that I am getting refer to the 22 lightning.

Does anyone know if they are still taking orders for the 22' and if so will it be at the original $40k advertised rate. That's the only scenario in which I buy this truck, especially now that the real world towing range is coming into focus. I'm thinking this is essentially a family car and dump trailer towing beyond a 20 mile each way range will be impossible, or too stressful. I'm sure I will take a pass on this and any other Ford if they don't honor my original reservation price.

I assume that you heard they increased the price of the Pro Model.

Yeah I heard they increased the price, but hoped that was for the 23 model. I do believe this fits the bill for bait and switch practices unless the specifically advertised the pro as a limited supply offer at time of my initial reservation. I'm not a lawyer though.

The honorable and wise business decision for ford would be to make pro models available for whoever wants them and to honor the advertised price at time of reservation. How does Tesla do it? What is the industry standard?

Oh well I guess it's time to cancel my reservation. My first and last Ford will be the 65 Mustang I owned 35 years ago.

In general I would not put too much stock in emails from Ford. They are often generalized, sent to a wide audience, and contain outdated/incorrect information. (Ford if you're listening.. you really need a better info management/public relations team). The emails are almost always on the border of useless to absurd.

You will be ordering a 2023...2022s have been closed to orders for quite a while now. Also note the price and availability change. Unless you have a lot of patience and striving for max value...I'd look to the XLT or Lariat instead of the PRO. Ford has not been producing enough of them and they seem to be tough to come by(with a long wait time)

if you signed up on day 1 and you have never gotten an invite I am guessing there was a issue and at this point you may be out of luck

It is not a financially sound option for me to buy the more expensive option. I am also morally opposed to supporting a company with these practices. I'm ok driving my old Lexus SUV for a few more years. It can pull my dump trailer just fine, but only gets 8-10 mpg when hauling. I'll revisit electric work trucks in the future when supply, demand and range have balanced out a bit more.

To each his own....

By the way, I am NOT saying you won't or can't get a PRO model(consult your dealer for details). However, Ford has been very upfront about limited availability of the PRO and we've all seen they are just hard to come by. The PRO buying process has been long and tedious to navigate for most. The XLT and especially Lariat trims are easier to come by. Just giving you options...
