Think that is the car wash neutral button. permanent magnet motors are not intended to freewheel unless the car deactivates stuff. esp. if no driver and vehicle is not on.

The manual does a good job of explaining its use. But to further explain: your car will go back into park when the door is opened, even if you have the shifter in N. The button allows you to put the car in N and exit the vehicle.

I believe this function exists in all EV cars. In my Tesla it is called car wash mode.

Also, I really recommend you read the manual. There are lots of features that have received little attention on this forum or other videos.

I have had my Tesla for three years and I still refer to the manual for features I seldom use.

Make sure your sunroof is open before pressing it.

On a related thought, what does putting the Lightning in "Park" actually do? I am assuming something physically engages somewhere in the drive line to prevent the wheels from rotating but does anyone know exactly what happens?

Thanks

thanks! I did search the manual, but I had no clue what I was looking for!
so this only needed when exiting the car and you want it to stay in neutral up to 30minutes? I can’t ever see needing this in my life

Most likely similar to a automatic transmission, a solenoid actuated pawl prevents the reduction gear from turning

If you break down and need to get pulled on to a flat bed, you will need this.

At a car wash is when you will use it, unless you go to one of those touchless washes that moves around your vehicle.

This feature is unique to EVs.
