Ford Continues to Expand BlueOval™ Charge Network, Adding Three New Charging Providers to Surpass 106,000 Chargers

Ford F-150 Lightning BlueOval Charge Network Adds Three Charging Providers to Surpass 106,000 Chargers F-150 Lightning Electrify America

  • Ford adds Francis Energy, Blink and soon-to-be Red E charging providers to the BlueOval™ Charge Network, further growing North America’s largest public charging network to more than 106,000 chargers, including 11,800 DC fast chargers
  • The new network additions build on continued network growth throughout the U.S. and Canada and support automatic charger routing via the FordPass App and through Charge Assist, which locates, navigates and activates payment for in-network chargers from your vehicle's infotainment screen
  • Ford was first to announce it is providing electric vehicle (EV) drivers future access to Tesla Superchargers which are growing in number; Ford will add more than 15,000 reliable DC fast chargers to its BlueOval Charge Network starting in the spring of 2024
  • Ford Model e dealers prepare for installations of DC fast chargers to the BlueOval Charge Network in 2024

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 24, 2023 – Today Ford announced an expansion update of more than 22,000 chargers to the BlueOval™ Charge Network, bringing the new network total to more than 106,000 chargers – and growing. The company is now adding access to three new charging providers: Francis Energy, Blink and soon-to-be Red E, further expanding convenient charging options for Ford EV customers across the U.S. and Canada with embedded charger routing and simple payment options via the FordPass® App.

The addition of the new charging providers, along with continued growth from existing charging network participants, includes more than 1,700 new DC fast-chargers and more than 20,300 Level 2 chargers since Ford’s last charger count update in May. The network now includes access to more than 11,800 fast-chargers, with plans for significant additional DC fast-charger growth starting in the Spring of 2024.

The addition of Blink, Francis Energy and Red E bring more than 10,000 new chargers to the network, including more than 550 new DC fast chargers. The remaining BlueOval Charge Network expansion comes from steady growth from existing charging network providers, which include Shell Recharge Solutions, Electrify America, ChargePoint, EVgo, EV Connect, FLO, and Electric Circuit.

“Continuous growth of the BlueOval Charge Network, including a critical focus on reliable fast charging, remains a top priority to provide the best possible electric driving experience for our customers,” said Bill Crider, senior director of global charging and energy services, Ford Motor Company. “With the addition of the Tesla Supercharger Network along with new fast chargers coming to Ford Model e dealerships in 2024, we are working hard to make range anxiety a thing of the past for Ford all-electric drivers.”

A Fast-Growing Public Charging Network

The BlueOval Charge Network, North America’s largest public charging network by an automaker*, is a “network of networks” that provides Ford EV drivers with access to a variety of charging providers without the need for multiple apps and memberships. The network provides one seamless stored payment account through the FordPass App, or the in-vehicle’s touchscreen via Charge Assist, that eliminates the need for onsite credit card use. Once owners have created a BlueOval Charge Network account, they can then select, activate, and pay for charging by using the FordPass “Find Chargers” function. Plus, Ford customers can enjoy trip planning and routing through FordPass Power My Trip on both the App and in the embedded navigation system.

For commercial customers who need to charge on the go at a public charger, payment and billing will continue to operate seamlessly with Ford Pro Intelligence software. The software enables fleet operators to easily set up a single Public Charge Management account for centralized billing, charging logs and monthly invoicing, allowing them to manage charging costs no matter where their drivers power up.

Ford also is sharing an increase to the estimated number of Tesla Superchargers being added to the BlueOval Charge Network next year from 12,000 previously announced to more than 15,000, and growing. These fast, reliable chargers will be available next spring to Ford EV customers via an adapter, which will become available on accessories.ford.com early next year. Pricing is yet to be announced.

Additionally, Ford Model e dealers are adding public-facing fast-chargers to dealerships across the U.S. and Canada, providing new locations to the BlueOval Charge Network by early next year.

A Complement to Easy At-Home Charging

More than 80 percent of Ford EV drivers currently charge at home, creating an ideal ownership experience where most customers can wake up to a fully charged vehicle every morning. Ford’s home and commercial depot charging offerings deliver peace of mind to EV drivers, who also have access to fast-growing public charging as needed.

The BlueOval Charge Network is steadily growing to continue to provide customers with more public charging options than any other integrated public charging network. Together with home or depot charging solutions, whether on a daily commute or a longer road trip, Ford EV customers are covered.

At this point, I am not even sure the point of the "blue oval" network except having them show up in the onboard nav (that I never use).

One account pays all your charging, instead of having to load up a bunch of accounts (EA, ChargePoint, etc.) with money.

I've been using it for a year now, and need to go close my EA and ChargePoint accounts to get those balances refunded.

Ah - I haven't really trusted the Ford app to actually pay for any charging. The only time I have used it is for plug-and-charged at EA when the EA app isn't working.

Does Fordpass give you real time charging info?

Yes, it does, just like charging at home. The receipt lacks some data that EA provides.

However, the reporting of the charge event itself lacks data that the EA app provides. And EA provides that forever, and downloadable, and Ford does not.

One other difference. Some credit cards, like Costco, give you more cashback (i.e. 4%) if you charge a car. HOWEVER, FordPass charges your card as Ford Motor Company, which is not identified as an EV charging company, so you don't get any bonus.

In other words, if you had the Costco Visa, and used EA's app, you would get 4% cashback. If you use FordPass, you will only get 1% (or 2% with other cards).

What I get in Fordpass on charging is very very little - is it charging, L2 vs. DC fast charge, and an inaccurate estimate of when charging will "finish". I can also refresh the main screen and sometimes get a battery percentage to update.

What I mean is, during the charge what rate is the truck charging at and current battery percentage. I tend to go to the bathroom and grab a meal/snack/coffee while charging and I need to be able to monitor that the charge session hasn't failed out so I can go fix it if/when that happens. Fordpass doesn't offer that meaningfully and that has been an issue the few times I used plug and charge.

Is there a list or map or anything of which dealers are going to be ModelE certified?

@Ford Motor Company

If you can swing it, you should negotiate a membership fee with everyone in your network. I haven't used BlueOval since my trial ended because it didn't give me the membership discounts, but I wouldn't mind paying you say $10/mo (~1.5x EA's fee) for a membership fee that allows me to access ALL of BlueOval's network at their preferred pricing.

Sure it's more expensive as an individual, but it'll save me from having to manage multiple memberships and more importantly lets me stay in your ecosystem for ease of use. I'm sure you're still in your transition from a car company to a software company, but I'm willing to bet that data might also be helpful in negotiating a transaction fee, or even allow you to upsell the network for certain providers to be a within a "preferred charging network" if they can meet certain criteria (uptime, avg charge speed, etc.)

Don't need them in your area, you need them between your area and areas you want to travel to 😉

This should look pretty much the same when you are on a DC Fast Charger except the Type will reflect DC Fast.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

Did charge rate get added in an update? I swear last time I checked that wasn't there, but it has been awhile.
