I didn't understand just how much EVs would save us in gas... my 2019 RAM 1500 with the HEMI got 11.6 mpg average over my ownership, and I figured $4.50 a gallon was about the average I paid for premium fuel during my ownership. Here's an interesting snapshot of how much less it costs to charge the Ford... we have Time Of Use charging at night that is only 4.4 cents/kw... just thought I'd share the math on my personal experience. $210/yr in electrons vs $3879/yr in gas. Absolutely incredible!

Make sure your electric cost is fully loaded, all variable costs (I don't include any of the flat charge like my $8.50 per month account fee. But everything variable.

My rate is less than 1 cent. Then I add distribution and 5 other categories and it's 15.5 cents...

Yep, I double checked and we pay "transmission" and "distribution" fees on mid-peak and peak kilowatts but the TOU pricing is "all-inclusive". Sure there's the 'basic fee' of about 12 bucks that I get when we have a good solar month, but I'd have to pay that with or without the EVs. I am reasonably confident that that price is the 'all-in' price!

Cost of electrons is the key, mine are much more expensive (excluding the $7 a month connection fee) I'm paying 27.7 c/kwh. but for computational purposes I used the average of the one year actuals 25.52 c/kwh

The lightning fuel costs over one year 8/4/22 to 8/3/23, actually cost me $2001.41
(DCFC & Home energy at varying rates through the year), 7843 KWH, inferring:
1.53 MPK based on actual total energy used and miles traveled; $0.1668/mile for the 12000 miles traveled

The gas vehicle pick list didn't have a F250 PSD, so I picked the nearest 15 MPG F150 equivalent.

This more pessimistic analysis takes into consideration, that I drive inefficiently, my actual performance clearly shows it, while the truck stats' actually show better numbers of 1.7 to 1.8 MPK the lower values include charging losses, preconditioning in winter on shore power, (which I'm going to do less of this winter, except when doing long trips).

You guys are fortunate. My “Facility charge” is $53!
That is highway robbery! My monthly customer charge is $4.96. Since I supply excess solar to the grid I figure my cost at 5.2 cents per kWh. That is what I got paid for my excess generation of 4,000 kWh last year. The year before it was 4.2 cents per kWh. So while I really don't pay anything out of pocket to run two EVs that is the "opportunity cost" that I would receive if I sold more to the utility.

My Lightning is costing me 2x as much as my eGolf did, I’m ready to sell it. $55 a month is too much to pay to drive 1,700 miles.
Before you get upset, yes, this is sarcasm.

Well, one of the main reasons I went Lightning is my yearly fuel bill was $8500 plus. Charging late at night during the lowest rate puts 90% minimum in my pocket. Since I went on the hourly rate plan, I’ve saved an average of $35 a month on my electricity bill, and that INCLUDES adding my Lightning to the bill for charging. Then add mileage reimbursement for work miles, and the savings is asinine.

I feel the same way. This truck is ridiculous.

I bought a Lightning Pro for $39,000. After tax credits (state and federal) it came out to roughly $28,000 OTD. Cheap right? But the cost to fuel is absurd with EA at $0.48/kWh and all.

So I really NEEDED to get out of my condo and onto a piece of property to charge on my own. But then I realized the utility company was charging $0.15/kWh so I needed to install solar. Not to mention the property needs maintenance so I had to hire a guy to mow it.

All said and done it cost me $328,000 for this truck and $50/week to maintain it. Absurd right? I wouldn't have this problem in a ICE vehicle.

I wanted to add that though my savings are more modest, I love my Lightning Lariat-ER, the performance, comfort, easy maintenance and many extra features are awesome, I'm glad I made the decision to buy a first generation EV truck.

Dumb question/poll: Even the cost was dollar for dollar the same as an ICE tuck, would you still want to drive a BEV?

"Yes" votes go here:

I'm a yes for several reasons, CO2 reduction (somewhat dubious in Mass, we have relatively "dirty" electricity), we need to start somewhere to move away from fossile fuels, BTW, it's fun to drive!

My savings isn’t as good as yours. But on average it costs me a little under a nickel a mile. My other truck gets 15 mpg and gas rarely costs less than $5 a gallon here. That’s 33 cents a mile. Towing electric is just under 7 cents a mile, gas a whopping 55 cents a mile. My gas truck only gets used by my kids and friends otherwise it just sits next to my house…
