This is definitely a dealership problem and not a you problem. Have to ask yourself “do I really want to put in all this extra work and possible headaches for something that the dealership neglected to do and admitted to me is their own doing and not my own?” They’re a car dealership, $15,000 is a nice chunk of change for us common folk, an easy write off to the dealership during their tax filings as a loss. Do whatever you want to, if your sales contract and pricing reflects the $7,500 credit towards the overall financed or purchased agreement you have no obligations in the situation, they can’t even attempt to renegotiate or have you resign in a situation like this. They can ask nicely all they want, at the end of the day it was their wrong doing and not your own. Fortunately for you and unlike most of us on this thread, it was in your favor and not against it.
All very true. It is not my normal local dealer. This dealer is about 80 miles away, so I probably will never deal with them again. I do feel bad because they treated me very well.

Your E-file should have rejected if the report was not there.
They must have gotten your sales report recorded at some point.
I wonder if they actually will get the credit transfer and they're BS'ing you.
Don't do anything that's viewed as fraudulent, i.e making an amended return to get cash in hand now to hand back to them, that's some shady shit!

I agree. I’m not going to do anything. But On my IRS.gov account page there is no clean vehicle listed. I did get email confirmation that my federal return was accepted

Interesting, you seen the snap shots about where to look and it wasn't listed for 2024?

I thought the issue were the folks trying to claim the credit getting rejected.

Have we had instances of folks having returns rejected who transferred the credit to the dealer? That's probably a bigger pool of folks.

In other words should the IRS reject your return if you aren't claiming the credit but instead choose the option that you transferred it to the dealer? You say you bought an EV but the IRS has no record of a dealer claiming a $7500 rebate on your behalf. So the IRS is whole - no need to reject. In these cases, the reality is the dealer gave you a dealer discount of $7500 out of their own pocket.

In Jim's case the dealer realizes this now and wants a re-do. But he will certainly get rejected if he now tries to claim the credit without the dealer form.

That could be, scrutiny is tighter on claims for credit now instead of validation of previously paid credit at time of purchase, we're all learning from these data points how the logic is working.

The dealer should try to file after the fact to see if they can still get the funds, no guarantee, but if they give it a try, they might be surprised, otherwise a the failure was theirs for not being on the ball January 1 st or during the initial grace period when the IRS' own system weren't up to speed.

Just as a note, when I filed the Clean Vehicle tax forms with my e-file there was no place to enter the dealers name. Only VIN, year and model of vehicle. I did a point of sale transfer to the dealer and all went well.

I did get the letter from IRS late January reminding me that I had transferred my credit. In fact I got the same letter 2 weeks after my return was filed and accepted. Not sure why the second letter was sent.

Seems the IRS is not giving the $7500 to anyone (dealer or owner) unless the sale paperwork was filed online by the dealer.

Hi folks - new member to this forum. Found this thread via Google search. Seems I'm not alone with this issue. In my case, my CPA tried to file our corporate returns with the EV credit for the 2024 Lightning I purchased June 2024 for the company. Return got rejected.

I'm getting the run around at a well known Baltimore area dealer (I drove from Upstate NY in June to purchase from them as they were one of the few that had the optional Pro Power option on a stock vehicle). The odd thing is that they claim to sell lots of Lightnings and MachE's, seems like they would know what to do.

Looks like there is no recourse other than the courts if they didn't file correctly within 72 hours. Sadly, small claims court limit is $5K in Maryland but that's better than nothing.

Expensive lesson to learn at tax filing time.....

I would make the dealership submit the paperwork, even if it's late. I did. I purchased my Lightning on 11/30/2024 and the dealer submitted the paperwork on 1/23/2025 when I asked them for the Time of Sale report. When I submitted my tax return electronically, the IRS accepted it and I got my $7500 credit and refund in about 5 day. It's worth a try.

Same here. Purchased Feb 2024 and nothing shows online and nothing received in the mail for dealer transferred credit. Figured I'd give it a try before yelling at the dealer Friday when I go to have the upper ball joint nut checked. Efile was accepted shortly after submitting so guess we'll see.

😈. A racially derogatory name I suspect. 😈

I’ve never dealt with them, but they do advertise good prices.
