“Hands on steering wheel” sensor not recognizing my hands

Hi all.

Very happy with my Lighting only one thing is a nuisance… the sensor in the steering wheel is not “recognizing my hands” while driving.

this results in a more or less constant “hold the steering wheel”-reminder… when it shows up I have to slide my hand on the right lower side of the steering wheel to get it to go away.

am I the only one or is this an known problem…

I’ve driven 10,000 miles and it’s getting to be a little annoying.

It doesn't sense your hands on the wheel. It senses torque input.

Yes. It has to register torque from turning the wheel, even if it's very light, within a time limit if you're not in hands free mode.

Never had any issues like this in the Mach-E…

My Mach-E seems more sensitive to this than my Lightning. Maybe it’s just vehicle to vehicle variation.

I rest my elbow on the window sill, and hang my index finger over one of the spokes on the side of steering wheel. The truck senses the weight from my arm, but it still steers on its own. It works pretty well.

I usually hold the wheel with one hand and more or less softly oppose the steering to keep force on the wheel. If it's leaning left to follow a curve I'll just a finger or two to push the opposite way.

You don't need to wiggle it. A slight constant pressure one way will work.

I typically go with a wiggle and a passive aggressive eye roll!

None of these options works for me. Even if I hold both hands on the wheel, it still freaks out

As others have stated it’s torque based, not touch. If the truck is driving straight, add some pressure to either side of the wheel either in anti-clockwise or clockwise manner.

The torque-based tricks work. However, they shouldn’t be necessary - I can drive in my other brand car all day without having to think about these little torque inputs. Hopefully Ford adjusts the sensitivity with a software update soon.

I had the same issue, it was beyond annoying. My solution below solved it for the most part. The 1 lb weight from Amazon did the trick. Won't help you in the city as it gets in the way, but it does on long stretches of highway.
