So I just got notified by the IRS that I elected to transfer my EV Tax credit to them. But at the time of sale, they told me they could not do that and wasn't set up for it and that I could claim it when I file. Is this something dealerships can do without my approval and just lie about it?

Here's the other issue. The IRS gave me the vin of the vehicle but it doesn't match up with my vehicle. So I'm thinking either the dealership just put down the wrong VIN and the dealership claimed my credit or somehow that other vin got attached to my info (which is unlikely bc I think the vehicle was several states away).

Has anyone dealt with anything like this?

That’s either an honest mistake and they missed up buyer information. Or, they are committing fraud.

Fraud is a crime and serious offense. If you didn’t get the benefit of a $7,500 discount and it was me, I would be getting an attorney.

I agree. If it is a different VIN, it is likely a mistake. Give them a call.

See page two. Around post sixteen. Seems this is not uncommon.

Did you buy yours around the first half of January 2024? A lot of us who did, dealt with mass confusion about the credit.

Agree with this. I'd love to think it's the first one, but WAY too many dealerships show every day how they fleece the customer and many are known to do it on purpose. Contact your dealer and hope it's the first. How is the money shown on your sale?

May want to contact the IRS as stated in the letter. This is why they sent you the letter to confirm if it is correct or not. They will take it from there.

Keep us posted.

The only thing that shows $7500 is that it lists a manufacturers rebate for 7500 under the down payment.

My guess is they finally figured out the IRS system portal thingy and back-entered your sale with your name, address, SSN, and mis-typed the VIN.

From my understanding that also means the dealership digitally signed his name to the IRS form without his consent.

I too got a letter pretty much stating the same thing. I know I had the 7500 applied at the time of sale..
I didn't look at the Vin to see if it matched.

That sounds like perhaps the source of some confusion since its the same number.

It would be great if anyone who posts about the new IRS letter also includes what month in 24 they purchased their vehicle.

Follow the instructions AFTER you've confirmed with the dealer that the other $7500 figure was a Ford incentive and not the federal tax credit transfer. Ask them for a copy of any disclosures or intake consent waivers you might have forgotten you signed regarding the tax credit election.

Many dealerships collect a power of attorney form for things related to registration or titling paperwork in case someone made a mistake and they have to correct a form. I could see a slimy dealership using this POA to sign and collect the rebate. The people in the finance department are the worst.
