No different than mpg ratings of ICE vehicles. You can hit the estimate if you drive the vehicle a certain way.

Drive like paw-paw around town and you'll get 320 miles.

The big gotcha for most folks is relearning how range works. In an ICE vehicle highway = better mileage while it's in-town driving that gets you the most range in an EV. If you're a long-haul, highway driver most of the time, EV might not be the best solution for a while.

I purchased my 2024 Lightning in September, installed the ProCharger and really like the truck, but during the purchase I was told the extended battery was designed for 320 miles depending on driving. I follow the charging guidelines from ford to typically charge to 90% but the numbers don’t add up at 90% it shows typically 240-245 miles so I charged to 100% and it reads 265 miles.
My question is: where is the 320 miles? Ford stated the extended range battery is 320 miles.
It is a common concern of first time EV owners, so don't feel bad.
The range depends on many factors besides the percentage charged to.

Speed and driving style are probably the most significant, but also ambient temperature and cabin HVAC use play a role.

So the range number on the dash takes into account your recent driving conditions and what the latest miles per kWh was, to predict your range assuming you continues driving that way.

So people started calling it the guess-o-meter. I bought a 2012 Nissan Leaf back in Dec 2011, and first experienced the phenomena. So now I have a feel for it and pretty much ignore the range number and just keep an eye on the state of charge percentage (also an estimate but a useful one) and my miles per kWh.

Under ideal conditions, level ground non-aggressive driving, no highway driving, etc. you could get MORE that the estimated range - I do on a regular basis with both my Lightning and the Leaf.

But if you hot-rod around, aggressive acceleration, drive on the highway at 80mph, have the AC or Heat blasting, and are towing a maximum load, well the range you get, the real range, will be substantially less than the maximum estimated range.

Just keep the truck between 20 and 80 percent charge most of the time and enjoy not having to buy gasoline!

I appreciate the advice.
But it’s not how much mileage I can obtain, it’s more of when you charge the battery to 100% the computer tells you approximately how many miles you can drive. Now I understand there are many factors that can take away from achieving those miles but why doesn’t it estimate the miles at or near 320 miles on a full charge instead of the 265?
I confirmed with the dealership that the truck does have the extended tange battery.
Simple answer that it is achieved using the EPA testing protocol.

You achieve it when you drive in mixed driving and realize 2.44 mi/kWh of consumption. It's not easy, almost impossible to do driving at high speeds. Pay attention to consumption, not the GOM.

If you don't need to regularly drive more than ~250 miles between charging opportunities, what is the concern? If you need to drive more than that without charging, it's probably the wrong truck for you.

Are others with the extended range battery seeing the 320ish estimated range at a 100% charge?
Not at this time of year, but I don't frequently charge to 100%, but will give you a snapshot Thanksgiving morning before our road trip to NH

I appreciate the reply, when you change your Lighting to 100%, what is your estimated travel range?


The range meter is really a guess-o-meter, it tries but it isn't that accurate. Pay more attention to the miles per kWh reading. You have a 131kWh (usable) battery, so if you are getting ~2.4-2.5 miles per kWh, you get the 320 miles. I can get that or even beat that in around town driving in warmer weather. In cooler weather, or at higher speeds you will get less.

Here is a snapshot from 2/29/2024 when I was preparing my Lightning Lariat-ER for a cold weather road trip. This involved charging to 95%, then preconditioning the battery pack for long distance journey and topping the battery to 100% in the final hour before rolling down I95

After 202 miles running down 95 & NJTP I still had 30 miles range available, so the projection was not useful since I burned energy at the average rate of 1.77 miles to the KWH [MPK] instead of the initial projection of 2.37 MPK {310/131}

What you need to focus on is usage rates and remaining capacity in the battery, just like my old Powerstroke, when the fuel tank got low, I made sure I was in range of a diesel fuel station, do that same with your Lightning.

I'm currently at 77% and shows 242 miles. So I guess I'd be close to the EPA rating. But, I mostly drive around 55mph to work. Prior to this I had a Jeep Gladiator and no way did I get close to the EPA numbers.....
