Extended Range V.S Standard Range Battery

When ordering a lightning, will you order an Extended Range or Standard Range Battery?

I would always go for the extended range just to enhance the range for regular and towing trips.

I've owned both the SR and ER Lightning and since I live in an area with cold weather and I drive a minimum of 100 miles everyday the ER does a better job for me. There were some days last winter that I couldn't get through my regular work day without a DCFC and that just is not the case with the ER. This is probably a fairly uncommon use case though.

Intending to be a long term owner. I don't drive much in a normal day and could absolutely have gone with an SR. When they lowered the price so the ER XLT qualified for the tax credit I went ER as it should have better long term battery health as I'll do fewer charge cycles over the years. Also went with max tow as I live in the desert and figured the heat management will help keep the battery healthy long term. Final reason is that I do tend to do at least one but sometime a few 600-800 mile trips a year. Was never an issue in my ER MME, and I'm hoping the Lightning will handle them just as easily.

Wish I could have found a Pro ER, but its a unicorn (fleet order only).
Lower range has never been a problem.
Just need to remember to charge before any longer drives or trailer towing.

standard range is fine for my PRO. I could not justify the $20,000 for 80 more miles. My 2015 Tesla model S only had 230miles of range and that was fine. flat and hot Florida is great for electric vehicles.

I bought a Standard Range based on my prior experience with a 75D Tesla which gets 237 miles of range….

Then I bought an Extended range.

Here’s my take..

- If you tow, get an ER.
- If you road trip a lot, get an ER.
- If you mostly drive around town with an occasional trip out of state, or frequently go only one state out; you’ll be ok with a SE.

On paper it’s not much more, and it’s not needed per se, but it makes life sooo much easier if you tow or go long distances.

I went with the XLT extended range with the max towing. As mentioned by others my lightning is a long term “investment” for me. So I wanted to have the additional capacity available for after the warranty fades. I also wanted the additional compressor to ensure my Lightning had the best chance to not degrade as much over the 10-15 years I plan to keep it.

Then as charging is challenging, that extra 80 ish miles is a nice buffer to make sure I can get to another charger if the one I wanted was broken.

I bought the standard range Lariat. The decision was a no-brainer. It was much cheaper, lighter, and doesn't have the moon roof (which I did not want.)
If I wanted to tow something more than a 100 mile round trip or travel, I'd go with an ICE truck.
My daily travels never exceed 100 miles. I have no interest in DCFC and will retain an ICE vehicle for road trips.
Absolutely no regrets.

Pro SR, haven't wished once for an ER.

The range has been more than enough for us, and I couldn't justify the amount of money it would cost for the estimated extra 90 miles (realistically probably 75ish miles). As far as towing, the ER gets you an estimated extra 45 miles.

I guess it depends if not having 1 or 2 extra DCFC stops on road trips is worth $10k more. For me and my family, it wasn't (and an ER was $20k+ more for me as I'd have to go from my, well equipped, Pro SR to an XLT ER). It's been a perfect vehicle for my family.

I went with ER for several reasons.
  1. Cold winters here, the loss of range is less of an issue with the larger pack.
  2. We road trip 2-3 times a year.
  3. Resale: I imagine ER would be in higher demand when it comes time to sell/trade.

XLT ER after 31k miles on a SR Mach-E taught us we need the range bump because our travel area in the SE is not great. The addition of Tesla will have a good impact for us, I still would never get another EV with less then 300 miles.

Primary reason: cost.
My daily commute is about 50 miles round trip. For day to day the SR battery is perfect. While I’d certainly make occasional use of the ER battery, I can’t see any way that I would make up for the $10k increase.
I don’t take enough long trips to justify the extra cost.

I did have a SR Mach-E before my Lightning, for the most part I got my range anxiety out of the way with that car before switching over..

If I could buy such a great package for $40k, how can you justify paying 150% of that for just 80 miles or so?
