Hey everyone, I got an email that my pro charge station is on the way. Ive been using the travel charger plugged into my wall outlet. The charging has been going pretty slow. Im sure the information is buried in the thousands of posts in this thread but i wonder if someone would be kind enough to give me the 411 for my situation? I don't intend to use the truck to power the house through the pro charger. I also don't intend to change the plug on my wall from what I have got. Given the 50amp breaker and the plug Ive got -what is the best way forward for me?

Does the charger come with a mating plug? Would I be able to push more power if i hardwire the charger? If all I can pull is 40amps of charging how can i limit the charger to only provide that much? Given I don't need the full capability of th pro charger should I sell the pro charger and go with a cheaper aftermarket charger? I already own a charge point for my wife's volt and I can dial back the max provided power on that charger.

Thanks in advance.

There is no plug on the charger. It has to be hardwired. You'll have to figure out how much of a sustained load you can pull out of that panel.

If you remove the 14-50 outlet you can use the 50 amp breaker to install the charger and set it to only pull 40 amps.

Unless you get an electrician out to hardware that FCSP into a 100 amp outlet you are better off selling your FCSP and buying a NEMA 14-50 40amp 3rd party charger. That would allow you to maximize your charging capacity with your current infrastructure, assuming you don't want to invest in infrastructure changes or the Automated Home Backup feature.

Hey Perfect! Thanks for the assist on this. Good to know that the pro charger can be dialed down. Also go to know it needs to be hard wired. I probs will go with a 3rd party charger.

So a couple things. 1) I see that the Ford pro charger is selling for $900-1000. The replacement level 2 charger from charge point i want is within $100 of this. So, Im thinking of just going with the Ford and dialing the current down to 40 amps 2) Is there any reason that I cant put a 14-50 plug onto the Ford pro charger? I mean vs hardwiring it?

Thoughts?

I believe the installation instructions specify hard-wiring. It is an NEC violation to not follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Using a cord & plug introduces an unnecessary potential failure point and, depending on what code cycle you’re on, may require a GFCI breaker that would not be required if hard-wired.

Check your utility to see if they have a discounted charger or rebates on them.

You can go to a hardware store and buy a 14-50 cord with a plug on it. Put it on the pro and set it to 40 amp charging. That is what I plan to do with mine if I can not put in a higher circuit.

Those range cords sold in hardware stores aren’t designed for continuous duty. Never mind that the terminals on the FCSP aren’t designed for that fine-stranded wire.

The Pro Charger I think you are referring to is the 80 amp charger, it requires a 100 amp circuit .
If you going to use that 50 amp circuit, i would recommend a 40 amp charger or upgrade your breaker panel. I'm not sure if 80 amp charger will work with a 50 amp circuit, plus I think that charger is a hardwire only. I have a 40 amp charger it take me 10-12 hours to charge my truck from empty to full charge which is not bad. In order for me to get the 80 amp charger. I would have upgrade my panel form a 200 amp to a 400 amp circuit, which i don't think is worth it right now.

Welcome NEW MEMBER, you're driving a 2024 Lightning the maximum it can charge is 48 amps,

Please note this thread started a while ago, the OP is driving a 2022 Lightning that could charge at 80 amps, if properly set up on a 100 breaker with related wiring and EVSE such as the FCSP.

If that is the case then how would you be able to hook your truck up to a fast charging station out in town, what do you think they use magic.

Also when I bought my truck ford told me the would come out and install a 80 amp charging unit for free. I could be wrong but it seems like you getting bad information.

It's common knowledge that unless you buy a special order fleet vehicle, 24s only have a single ac charger at max 48 amps ac.

There's a difference between AC charging (level 1 and level 2) at home and level 3 DC charging on the road. Level 1/level 2 use what is referred to as J1772 (only the top part of the plug on the truck) with the vast majority of those being available to purchase being hardwired for 48 amps. There are 80 amp versions like the FCSP and Grizzl-e Ultimate 80 amp but very few EVs can actually AC charge that fast (2022/23 lightning ER, GM twins, old Tesla Model S) and can be cost prohibitive to install over any distance or older homes that require a service upgrade.

Level 3 supplies DC power directly through the bottom 2 pins which are part of a CCS connector that we're all familiar with at EA and Tesla and can receive up to 500 amps (180kW+). The FCSP uses this connector but only uses the bottom pins to supply power back to your house in the event you splurged for the full home integration.
