I think I have enough history here that shows that I was a believer.

I hope you do not have to go through a module replacement…
I don't usually check posters history before replying. I had no idea you went through a module replacement because you didn't list that in your "will not miss" list. If you had, I would have more understanding of why you no longer like the brand. Anyways, thanks for participating in the forums and wish you the best.

Going through a module replacement is a bit like having your hot girlfriend cheat on you. You loved everything about her and had a beautiful relationship....right up until that point. Suddenly, you can't trust her anymore. And once "You've lost that lovin' feeling...it's gone, gone, gone...whoa-oh-oh-oh..." 💔

Nothing says financial acumen (or desperation) like locking in losses in a down market. Except eating the depreciation at its worst.
So you think there will be an up market for our used Lightnings? Any projection as to when that will be?

Hold on to your vehicle for its lifetime and you’ll be rewarded with very low average annual depreciation. The Oracle of Omaha would tell you the same thing.

And yet, you (and all of us here) went directly against Warren Buffet's advice and bought an experimental vehicle with probable low residual future value. That was an emotional decision we made, not a sound financial choice. Turns out that none of us who bought Lightnings did so because we are financial geniuses. So maybe we should all just all stop with the judgement and pretentious hindsight advice. I think the Millennials were on to something when they say "You do you".

Speak for yourself... I waited over a year before I bought and knew almost everything about it (Not because I did not want one on launch day, because patience is a virtue). I looked at every dealer site in my area for sales daily. When the 24's came out, the 23's just kept going down and down and down. I bought at the absolute dip. Paid 82k Canadian (57k USD) for a platinum. I already knew about the depreciation and knew if I bought it, I would have to keep it for at least 8 years. I don't do any long distance, I have solar so I don't pay for gas and maintenance. Absolutely love everything about the truck (except software but it's getting there). Do I regret my purchase? Not one bit. Did I make an emotional decision? Nope. Do I buy trucks as some sort of investment? Absolutely not. With the initial low cost and savings in fuel, it almost pays for itself. Do you think I made a mistake? The only way it would be is if I bailed on my 8-10 year plan and sold now.

Oh BTW...Go Oilers Go

The reason all the early adopters are saying how much the vehicle depreciated is because they overpaid and now ford has adjusted the price drastically. My window sticker said 103,000 but I paid 83,000 Cad. This was for a 2024 lariat. The big problem is that ford expected it to sell as well as the ICE F150’s and that just isn’t the case. A lot of people by these trucks for work and let’s be honest, the range just isn’t there yet. Don’t get me wrong I love my truck and the range is enough for what I need it for. The GM EV’s are gonna have the same problem the manufactures price these trucks way to high and when they aren’t selling as well as they hoped they price adjust. The hummer ev is having the same problem right now.

I think you’re treating an always depreciating asset like an investment so you felt the need to sell. At the end of the day, does it really depreciate if you never sold it in the first place? You dont like the negative equity but turn around and cut a check for $10K while getting rid of a vehicle? WTF over.

You say you wont miss the payment but you could have easily controlled this and not purchased it. Does the depreciation really surprise you? EVs are a niche product and the Lightning is a small subset of that. As far as efficiency, the truck works as advertised. If you’re complaining about winter range, perhaps you needed more research before pulling the trigger. Finally, bad dealerships exist everywhere this isnt a Lightning specific issue.

Definitely not during truck month when Ford offers 0%/72 mo on Lightnings.Talk about depreciation when you buy high and sell on the low.

As I said many times here, people who bought the next shiny thing feel like they got burned. They didn’t know trucks, motors or batteries.
Nor their own financial position and goals. They should have bought a Prius. And not whine on this forum.
BTW - I bought a high priced “experimental “ sports car in 2004 that depreciated quickly for the shiny object people. I’m still running the beast.
Rant over.

You do realize that the Depreciation was MASSIVE due to a lot of external factors right.

Prices were sky high post covid.
Ford launched to great fanfair and then soon after massively over produced, flooding the lots.
The whole market slowed, further filling the lots.

The Lightning isn't expected to go up in price, but with increased costs due to tarrifs and the potential for increased fuel costs, Depreciation may nearly stop for these trucks.

sw engineering manager,
Losing money on the early adopter premium (market adjustments for example) is not "depreciation" in the traditional sense. 2nd and 3rd year adopters and used buyers are not going to need to pay that premium and the market will not support it for long. That premium may be an "expense" well-spent to enjoy getting the cool new thing sooner, but it cannot be considered a depreciating "asset" that you can resell.

Anytime you pay for a "new" vehicle, the resale value of "new" literally evaporates as you drive off the dealer's lot. That is the same with every car, and nothing new with EVs. This is why when selling after only a couple of years, the loan (typically linear over 5 years) is often upside-down compared to that big initial dip in resale value for a new vehicle.

Not counting the incentives and rebates in your calculation is also kind of an inaccurate way to think about depreciation of an asset.
