I too would have liked the parking brake automatically engage when placed in park. When parking my truck in my garage I have to be with in one inch of my rear wall otherwise the garage door will hit the front bumper. I realized that the truck rolls forward slightly after placing it in park. Luckily the body shop guy is friend and repainted the bumper for free the first time it happened. I have found that now when I back into the garage I simply engage the parking brake and hit the ignition/off and the truck automatically goes into park. First world problemsā€¦
Iā€™m going to recondition to this method. I donā€™t like that small amount of roll, because of what it could hit and the bucking (if you are not on perfectly level ground) feels unrefined for a 2020s vehicle. Yes, first world problems.

So I got out for a quick errand and did some testing. So at home on the driveway slope if I put the truck in park it will set the parking brake every time. If I pull forward it automatically releases. If I attempt to go backwards (the slope is down away from the garage) then I must press the accelerator at least 3 times or manually release the brake.

Also in a flat parking lot - the brake would release automatically either direction. The key is that I also had to set the brake - so it is on me to do so. At home the truck is setting the brake on its own.

Per the manual, this is not Hill Start, it just determines to set the brake on hills. From the manual:

Ahhh, you know, I have had to press the pedal more than once to disengage. I never paid enough attention to know if it was when I was reversing. Thanks for the feedback!

You do not have to manually release it. It disengages when you apply the accelerator.
If my next direction of travel is forward back into the garage it will release.
Maybe my memory is faulty, but I vaguely remember going forward slowly in my driveway a number of times, looking at the dash, and seeing the Parking Brake lit above the gear indicator. So now I ritually press down on the Parking Brake lever before going in either direction. I'm an RYFM type, so I need to get with that - learning a bunch in this thread.

It's great to hear that it's hard to have a rollaway accident with a Lightning.

I wish the Parking Brake set/release were reversed as I still have muscle memory from the '60s where, IIRC, one would pull out to release and push in to set. Or maybe if my memory is faulty, pulling towards me just seems like it should be a release.

On our board association head blaming our neighbor's rollaway on her fob, I just took that as so much BS to shift the blame away from the woman (an otherwise well-respected person in the neighborhood) and to avoid any discussion at the meeting of how a vehicle could roll away or make the lesson that ours is a hilly neighborhood, so let's all try to avoid such accidents in the future because they could be far more disastrous than the one or two we've already had involving a very hilly driveway.

I wouldn't mind an automatic parking brake. My drive way is sloped but it's 50/50 if the truck detects it. I hated when it wouldn't set and the truck would rock forward as I let the brake out so now I manually set it and release it every time. It's not like it's hard to do, but if I could click a button for it to always set it'd save me a second.

Due to my carelessness, I recently "parked" my 2018 Audi S5 on a slope in neutral. After $5,000 out of pocket to cover all of the expenses associated with my carelessness, I'm hyper sensitive to using the parking brake whether needed or not.

Is there a setting to have the parking brake automatically engage when the truck is put in park? My other EV automatically sets the parking brake whenever the car is put in park and disengages it when D or R is selected. The truck is able to disengage the parking brake when the accelerator is pressed, why would you not want to automatically engage it when park is selected if you have removed the possibility of driving with the parking brake engaged?
My 2022 Lightning engages the parking brake after I start the truck and it is idling and there is no incline. Then, I have a heck of a time turning off the parking brake. Iā€™m fiddling with the thing for five minutes. It doesnā€™t disengage when I put the truck in drive. :(

Place foot on brake pedal, press downward on the E-brake switch it's a two way momentary button, pull up to turn on E-brake, push down to release.

I know. However, it would not disengage. Something is wrong with it. The parking brake usually makes a little sound when it engages/disengages. There was no sound.

Time to bring it in for service then.

With the huge lurch and rocking back and forth after putting the truck in park, you'd think there would be an auto engage option for the parking brake. The lurch has already caused my bumper to hit up against a wall in a very tight quarter parking situation. It really moves a lot. Never experienced this in any other vehicle and I've driven dozens of cars and trucks.
