In other countries, the electric Kia provides an option to turn off the backup beep. They use the same harness on all cars, and someone figured out how to add a switch to the US version. This would be very convenient when leaving the drive way at 6am… might Ford have provided the same type of workaround on the Lightning?

Since the Lightning is only sold in North America, why would Ford include wiring that can’t legally be used?

Don’t know… Only sold in NA today. It could be short sighted for a company like Ford with a large international presence to not consider the option… also, are Canadian regs different?

Is the backup noise required by law now? I know a few years ago the low speed sound became mandatory, but I was not aware of the backup sound being requisite.

Maybe because of the weight it is classified like a commercial truck? Just a guess.

Cars aren't required to have beepers, but are required to emit sound while the vehicle is in reverse (stationary or moving) at a louder sound than required when moving forward. The current method seems like the easiest way to accomplish this. You wouldn't be able to legally disable it since the system that generates sound when moving forward wouldn't be active just sitting still in reverse with your foot on the brake.

Link to the final rule below (372 pages of Government bureaucracy at its finest):

Overall I don't find the reverse sound in the Lightning to be too bad. The sound in Hyundai/Kia is significantly louder and borderline obnoxious.

Nope - the NHSTA requirement for EVs to emit sounds specifically exclude heavy duty vehicles (over 10,000 pound GVWR).

Agreed. I was prepared for something loud when my truck was delivered but pleasantly surprised when it was backed off the trailer and I finally heard it. I can live with it. Now that frunk beeper....

Not an oem solution but this is from @WillB17 he is the one who found the location of the frunk speaker. He has two versions, a permanent bypass and a remote bypass. I find them both awesome solutions but the wife has other thoughts.

Appreciate the shoutout!

What many don't realize is that FMVSS is the body that establishes these rules, which are minimum performance requirements for manufacturers, not the end user. The end user can do whatever they would like with the speaker at this moment.

So, removing the low speed sound wouldn't be breaking any laws?

I don't mean to knock Megaohm's product, but I learned this weekend while installing ACC wiring that instead of a resistor you can use an old Ford Injector to replace the reverse/PAWS speaker and maintain the IP rating of the connector. I took the speaker apart and found that it is indeed just a 4Ohm speaker, so the injector actually matches the load very nicely. If you don't have a shop with old injectors lying around or a mechanic friend who can give you one just pick one up next time you're at a salvage. Or you can get them new for about $25 bucks or just buy https://www.megaohmmotorsports.com/product/ford-psbk-ece
