I was using my tail gate as a work bench and while I had walked away I think I heard a beep or something and it automatically closed.
Any one from Ford or tech insight have an answer? How to keep it open when being used.

Probably a pocket activation. I've opened my frunk several times. You can turn the electric portion of the tailgate off through the truck settings.

Itā€™s happened several times with my ā€˜23 Lariat 73k miles. But, I admit Iā€™ll have to see it again - with no possibility of fob activation.

Iā€™d rather it worked like it is supposed to. Sponsored
Funny that it will close with weight on the tailgate. Wonder if there is some 'already in place' amount of weight it will recognize that would stop it from closing? Need to test that.

I tried closing it and then put my hand very lightly on the tailgate, about 2" up, and it reversed. Maybe if no change in weight when closing, items already in place (and sliding to the hinge, lessening torque needed!), it will close. It will reverse if my bed rug gets pinched in the hinge area.

The adjustable Tailgate Boss seems like the best device to use to brace it open:

Almost certainly a result of FOB button activation. If your truck is capable of Phone as a Key it eliminates this issue.

I think you are correct. It takes very little to turn the gate around once it's moving. It makes sense that it would activate at slightly different weights though. Spray on bedliner or rain are two examples of extra weight that is totally normal. There are others, I'm sure. Neat engineering.

Iā€™ve had this happen several times. My biggest loss was a tumbler of whiskey. I have a 23 lariat and itā€™s very glitchy, especially tailgate operations!
