Sadly, yesterday evening I had a minor collision in my '22 Lariat ER. Thank goodness no injuries, both vehicles were driveable, and the contents of the fully enclosed trailer that got a whack from the headlight area of my truck were undamaged as well - as was the F350 towing it.

It was an extremely slow-speed collision. My headlight and the area of the bumper directly below hit the frame on one side of the trailer's double doors, and it looks like the built-in lightbar in the frunk hood contacted the trailer's door locking hardware. The fender and adjacent body panels seem fine, but the headlight is definitely toast.

As always with fender benders it looks like I will certainly need a new bumper cover, and assuming the frunk lid/grille plastics and lights are inseparable from the metal "hood", I think I will probably need a new frunk lid assembly. The frunk functions 100% normally but looking at how it's all put together, this seems likely. You can see in the attached photo there's some scraping on the hood directly adjacent to the lightbar, and the corner of the metal is pushed in just a little - the big discoloration shown in the photo is actually just roughened/scratched paint; still, I bet the whole thing gets swapped. The adjacent fender area isn't even scratched - the "discoloration" there is actually a reflection of something out of frame. Lucky, really, even though this will surely cost some $.

Though the headlight housing and lens broke into 20+ pieces, the entire light assembly inside still functions. Once I taped it up well, masking out the broken plastic on the side, even the high-low beam pattern and focus seem totally normal. Car rolls down the road straight and true, even that stupid air dam still works, as does Blue Cruise.

My worry is that every part that looks to need replacement looks like it's specific to the Lightning Lariat ER (or possibly Platinum - does the Platinum use the same lightbar/frunk hood?). How bad is it likely to be waiting for parts? My trusted local dealership closed their body shop a few years ago as did most others and I don't trust the ones that still do this in-house, so I'll be using an independent shop; I found one with good reviews that is Ford, MB, and Tesla certified which looks like a decent bet if they can fit me in. But I generally don't trust body shop guesses as to when they will get parts from manufacturers...

I backed into my girlfriend's SUV (doh!). Damaged the rear bumper, taillight and bedside. The insurance assessor put it at $4800. A lot of that was in the taillight which was $2000 from Ford (and 6-8 week lead time!). I got one on Ebay for $650. I still haven't gotten the bumper and bed panel repainted but it's minor so shouldn't need to replace the bedside, which would be the bigger issue. The rear bumper is shared with the ICE F-150, so easy to come by.

Is the headlight shared with other current production F150 models? Because of the damage to the trailer involved (sigh) this is all going through insurance, but I do remember signing a waiver agreeing to use of reconditioned parts to speed up a repair years ago, and, I mean...I don't want my truck sitting in a body shop waiting for parts any longer than it has to.

It looks like there's a small additional part above the bumper cover that interfaces with the frunk assembly, but still I suspect the bumper/cover probably don't interchange with ICE trucks due to the cooling requirements of the EV.

Sorry to hear about these. One would expect Automatic Emergency Braking to prevent these type incidents.

It tried to. Trailer in front of me slowed while accelerating away from a light when the guy in front of him made an unexpected left turn. The beeper went off and I near simultaneously stomped the brake to the floor. My foot slipped off the edge of the brake pedal and hit the gas, overriding the AEB. Automation can't always protect you from bad luck or human error...

Headlight is unique to Lightning.

Unfortunately the AEB didn't activate in my case. I think it could've been because I was coming in at a weird angle. The AEB might've tried to engage but it was too late if it did. I heard the back up sensor beep and immediately hit the brake but it was too late. I had completely forgotten her car was there. It was 11pm and my daughter had called (and woken me up) to come get her at her friend's house. I was doing a 3 point turn and was backing up much faster than usual, no exterior lighting, half asleep, black car parked in a place where there usually isn't a car. Just a confluence of events but unfortunately the truck didn't save me. 🙃

Hopefully thinks have picked up and you get your truck fixed quickly.

Had my Mazda cx-5 (dime a dozen pos), in the body shop in 2022 for 7 full months waiting on parts, tires, paint, general stupidity of the shop to be finished after being rear ended with 14k$ CAD in damages.

That looks a lot like my damage except I guess you clipped the fender panel too. If you don't mind my asking, what else did you end up needing replaced?

I hit a tire on the highway which took out the plastic sensor cover on the bumper as well as the air dam. No paint work was necessary. It took about two months for the parts to arrive. I used a rural body shop who agreed to wait until all parts were in before doing repairs. Thankfully they didn't find any other issues when they tore it apart.

I'm not sure how long it will take to get parts but if it were me I'd try to avoid a situation where the body shop has your truck before they have parts. That might be inevitable due to broken parts you can't see.

Not if one read the information about the feature in the manual...

Initial estimate from the body shop my insurer recommended (Ford certified, Tesla certified, Audi certified) came back at $17,000. $9K parts, $8K labor. I was wrong about the hood - the hood, light bar, and grille are separate parts and they're each around $1K. Headlamp assembly at $900, about 4 components of the bumper assembly at a few hundred bucks each; it adds up. At this point, since all these parts are available from junkyards even though Lightning specific, if I were directly paying for the repair I know what I'd do; but, it's the insurer, so...🤷

Only thing I saw that was surprising was quite a bit of labor to remove the bed, remove the battery, and put the truck on a unibody measurement/straightening machine. There is a note "rear access points for measurement require removal of bed" but I don't know about the battery. I don't know that I really want all that stuff torn apart and put back together "just in case" the frame is bent. I suspect I can probably tell them to omit this service unless there's some actual evidence the vehicle's not straight, but... I mean, again, it's not really costing me anything.

What would you do?

My sense is that the geometric relationships between the brake and accelerator pedals is off as I too have accidently stepped on the accelerator twice. I attribute it to one-pedal driving causes you to lose muscle memory.

My foot is wide enough I sometimes feel the accelerator pedal when applying the brake. I’ve driven standard for 25 years, so I’m used to narrow pedals. I wish they were a bit farther apart in the lightning.
