Tesla destination to J1772 - 80 amp recommendations?

Hi all,

We’re about to take a trip in our ER Lightning Lariat and there are some Tesla destination chargers in the area around our hotel.

I am looking to buy an adapter but would be worried to buy a 48 amp version because the Lightning can pull 80 amps, I believe.

Lectron doesn’t sell an 80 amp version but this company does on Amazon. Any experience with them? Price too good to be true?

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. If it doesn’t work no harm no foul, but as long as it’s nothing catastrophic/damaging.

as long as it’s nothing catastrophic/damaging.
That’s the part that would worry me. Unless you’re sitting there watching it, last thing I would want is a damaged Lightning hundreds or thousands of miles away from home.

I am pretty sure Tesla destination chargers only output up to 48amps as I think Tesla's also top out at accepting 48amps, so the destination chargers are built with that in mind (someone will correct me I am sure if I am remembering that wrong). The lighting will only pull what the station can give just like your lvl 2 at home.

I have used a few Tesla destination chargers on my MachE (using a Lectron adaptor) and often found they were wired from much less than 48 amps and was disappointed with the charge rate per hour.

The regular Tesla wall connector only does 48 amps, but they make a High Power Wall Connector (HPWC) that does 80 amps. I don't know how common they are for public access out in the wild though.

I bought the TeslaTap 80amp adapter to use with my ER while traveling. From what I understand the 80 amp Tesla wall connectors are rare but they do exist. I didn’t want to risk melting a 48 amp adapter in case I was actually using one of the older 80 amp wall connectors out there.

Spending more money for a well-known adapter brand with a higher amperage rating was worth the peace of mind, IMO.

I'm not convinced it's safe to assume "nothing catastrophic/damaging" will happen with these off-brand adapters. I had two Hansshow "80A" adapters get so full of water I think they could have shorted line-to line just as easily as the line-to ground fault that tripped the safety in my Wall Connector. Hansshow refused to provide any assistance except via some super sketchy Chinese chat app I am not comfortable installing on my phone.

I bought one of the same adapters for a family member who didn't listen when I told him to stop using it. One day when he tugged on it to pull it out of the charge port of his RAV4, instead of coming out as it should have it broke apart into two pieces and left bare copper pins sticking out. I had to go get a set of heavy rubber gloves and some insulated pliers to extract it. Not too cool. There shouldn't be any voltage on those pins when the car isn't charging but, still... Hair raising.

I am no longer comfortable using these generic adapters. TeslaTap, A2Z, or Lectron, OK. The others...not so much for me at least.

I carry the Lightning Edition of the big powe TeslaTap. There are high output destination chargers out there and I didn’t want to risk it. With that being said, in 70k miles of road tripping EVs over the past two years or so, I have never had the need to use a Tesla destination charger. When it comes to Level 2 public charging, J1772 is utterly dominant.

Interesting. Less than half your miles. Tesla hotel chargers half dozen times.
