Strange behavior with “keep hands on wheel”

Driving with lane following and the screen say keep hand on steering wheel. Hands were on the wheel at the 10-2 position. Grabbed it harder and the truck did the break check thing to startle me. Don’t know where the steering wheel sensor is but something is wrong.

The sensor measures torsional resistance in the steering column. "Holding the wheel" is an irrelevant metric unless you provide some small resistance to the steering wheel. It sucks on long stretches of straight road.

yeah, would be a lot better if it were a capacitive wheel. There's no rhyme or reason on how the torque sensor operates. I've just had my hand loosely around the wheel providing no force and went several minutes without it nagging while other times I've provided resistance, and it instantly goes into nag mode.

In my experience, when I'm not on a Hands Free road, then BC will nag, regularly, advice above will prevent the nagging.

When I'm driving on a Hands Free road and it starts nagging, it's usually for a good reason, driving directly into setting or rising sun plays havoc with the camera, loss of reference lines on the road surface will usually disengage Hands Free mode and nag me to grab the wheel.

All that said, what were your road conditions?

Noting that your an experienced Mach-E owner I suspect you know these things.

My Lighting gives this warning on occasion- but not early as often as my other vehicles with lane centering. My wife’s Jag is the worst- its lane centering is wildly annoying- it goes off every 5-10 minutes (at minimum) during normal interstate travel. A 6 hour road trip I have to disable it becomes so annoying. I hate it.
My lighting certainly does it on interstate travel, but not as often as my other vehicles with lane centering. I’ve yet to own a vehicle with lane centering that doesn’t occasionally give this warning.

After two years, I've gotten pretty good at nudging the wheel at regular intervals. My awareness has tuned itself to the yellow popup in my peripheral vision which causes a somewhat involuntary wheel twitch now. :cool:. Sometimes I still miss it and get the nag.

It only requires a slight move on the wheel.

As said above, it's a torsional sensor.

the truck did the break check thing
I have never seen that, what does that mean?

you get the yellow screen that tells you to put your hands on the wheel, then you get the red and beep and then it hits the brakes twice. Haven't tried to see what it does after that but I seem to remember seeing something where it slows to about 5mph and just keeps going. No stop or anything.
