Carjackers don't want to kill you, they want the car. If you are getting car jacked, just get out and let them have it. You live, call the cops, move on with life.

I recall a toggle that switches between driver's only or all doors. Does that not work with the key fobs? Since I'm always getting in with family I leave it set to unlock all doors.
Carjackers are irrational, armed, and unpredictable and usually high on something then just good ole relaxing MJ. I’ve seen videos of people getting popped in the face with a bullet before they even had a chance to open the door.

My old F250s key fob. One press would unlock the driver door and two presses would unlock the rest. Why did we ever go away from that?

You hope. Does not always work out that way. Obviously it depends on the situation.

The situation here is that the door is already open, with the complaint about the auto shifting into park. If the door is open, I would just slowly exit. Seems to me like a sudden move to shift into drive would elicit undesirable responses.

I'm with you on the key fob part. Double click to open all doors is well known, I'm surprised the lightning does not do that.

This is a very unique situation for sure and have gotten off base from the original topic slightly. Definitely not gonna bother me too much but considering what happens to kids that are left in backseats when carjackers do get said vehicle. If I found myself in that unfortunate spot, I would want to stomp the gas and get the hell out of there.

Knowing what I know about our trucks that would be impossible because even if you do open the door and then put it in drive the E brake also sets so you’re kind of trapped either way without some very fast critical thinking. I guess you just have to hope that the criminal is considerate enough to give you time to get your family out of the vehicle after you leave the driver seat. Or carry.

Instead of trying to escape with the door open, just say to them, this is an EV, it's electric and only has a range of a few miles, that might discourage them?

Being aware of your surroundings is the first rule of avoiding serious trouble like carjackings.
This made me LOL... So you are going to negotiate with them by trash talking your truck.. No, you don't want this piece of crap, it's an EV. And the guy is going to say... Oh man, you're right. My apologies, you have a good evening now. LOL

Well my 23 Pro does. 1 press for drivers door, 2 for all doors and tailgate.

Hmmmm... I'll switch the toggle and see if that does it on mine then.

The truck will shift into drive with the door open. When you press the accelerator pedal the parking brake is released automatically.

A quick Google search shows about 25 people are killed by carjackers each year and about 150 people are killed by rollaway accidents. A video is not data. To be fair, a Google search is not data either but numbers are a much easier way to discuss probability and risk.

maybe in Drive…. to be honest I’ve only tested this in reverse while attempting to back up a trailer and the brake would not release. Sometimes reverse is the answer not drive though. I live in a low crime area so not an actual concern anyways just ponderings.

Exactly! I'm guessing the demographic on a forum where the entry price is a truck that costs at least $40,000 used is well below average risk of carjacking...which is already low.

Glad I could make you laugh...but I was not trying to, I was serious.

So, um...pretty much the way you describe it...except the guy is going to say something less polite and full of swear words...

Seriously, I use other strategies to avoid being a victim - I dress poorly when I go to stores, shirt untucked, pants with holes in them, old shoes, etc., drives my wife crazy to see me leave the house that way, but it works for me.

If they guy is armed and wants to steal my truck even though it is an EV, them I am not going to put up a fight, try to flee or pull out my karate lessons from memory - I never was able to catch a bullet in flight during my training, and my life is more important to me than a truck...any truck...even though I dearly love my Lightning.

I got the "max trailer tow package" and the "tow technology package" on my 2023 Pro and have all those cameras to tell me what's going on, but I haven't set up the "trailer backup assist" yet or tried maneuvering to hitch my boat up with the Lightning the old fashioned way...

In my Ranger I would sometimes have the door open when backing up trying to get it lined up...until I got the feel of the truck and was able to rely solely on my spacial senses and the rear view mirrors to get the hitch within micrometers of the ball without having to get in and out of the truck or have my wife try to direct the coupling position, so to speak.

My 2023 Lightning Pro key FOB works that way - two presses is required to unloack the passenger and other doors as well as the tail gate.

Some cities are worst than others...Washington DC and surrounds have/has become a dangerous place for car jackings, and the age of the jackers has dropped quite a bit and they seem to have gotten more violent as well...one reason I never drive into DC anymore....

Sorry need to subscribe to read the whole story, here's an excerpt:

"...In Washington, the number of carjackings more than doubled from 2019 to 2020, from 152 to 360, and then kept climbing—to 484 in 2022, and 958 in 2023..."

Sorry Man....I didn't mean to offend you. I agree with you 100%. No truck is worth even a slight gamble on your life. To me, that even includes trying to convince them that my truck is a crap EV. A person that is willing to do an armed car jack is clearly not someone that is wanting to have a discussion about the merits of hijacking ICE over EV's. Just talking to him could be enough in his mind to be some form of resistance. My only words would be, "Hey man, just take it" and then get out of the way. Again, I apologize. If it wasn't meant to be funny and you feel it is best to try and dissuade him before handing over the keys, then all the power to you.
