So I did use your method of pressing the unlock button for the successful power transfer. When I pressed the button the truck seems to wake up, well at least it starts clicking and whirring. So I do believe you are on to something. If you're home (and awake!) the next time there's an outage and automatic transfer doesn't work, try pressing the UNLOCK button on the truck's charger port to the right of the charger head, remove the charger head, wait about 15 secs, and plug it back in again. For me, since October (when I've been awake!), backup power transfer has worked 11 of 11 times, but I've had to use the UNLOCK button trick to get it to work 6 of those 11 times.
My theory now is something about driving the truck, charging it, etc., screws up the truck/FCSP connection state for backup power transfer. What I plan to do in the future is test whether just pressing the UNLOCK button after the truck is charged to its set level and just parked in the garage will prep the truck for a functional automatic backup power transfer BEFORE the grid goes out. But right now, I don't feel like testing the system another 11 times in a row to get good numbers. For the moment, I'm just looking for a Ford update that addresses whatever the truck/FCSP screw-up is...
The earlier outage had the amber fault light. It did not clear until the power came back on.
I did try it earlier in the month, during as outage and did not have any luck. But in the last month I have noticed that my Ford Charger is reporting my charging statistics more consistently. (I have a spreadsheet with my dailly charging comparing what the truck says vs the charger) Haven't tracked it but think that the charger reports the data when it reboots with the white led bar when it is unplugged. What I have noticed is that I don't always get the white light bar.
I seem to recall there was a earlier forum post about the charger and the truck not reporting the same charge data. With the truck reporting what it accepts and the charger showing what it pushes to the truck. The data is not consistent enough for a thorough analysis. Anywhere from 4% to 15% lost in the transfer.
Thanks for sharing your experience Jim Lewis. It has been helpful.
