I loved the part about connecting your phone to the passenger screen using an HDMI cable. WTF. No one is going to be using a cable in 2025!! Have they heard of Airplay or Chromecast!???

I read a story recently where Tesla may need to drop prices again. If they do drop them, all of a sudden the reveal price of the dual and tri motor CT wouldn't seem way out of line. It had been hard to reconcile the CT being cheaper than a MY for the last year, that's not the case anymore.

Other manufacturers will need to adapt or they won't survive. Even Ford acknowledged this with the plan for simpler production on the next truck. They were able to get this first EV out quickly, but not for the right production cost. The next EV will be more well thought out and cheaper to make, I have full faith in this.

I think base level 150+ kwh battery trucks at $60k will become the standard. If a company can't achieve this target and the competition is able to, they won't be around making EV trucks for long. The biggest supply chain and pandemic hurdles are going away, it's time to sink or swim.

Range - Standard Battery 350 miles. Extended Range: 500 Miles on 229kwh
battery

Standard Range battery is 168kw - larger than Lightning ER!

  • 0-60 in 4.0 seconds.
  • 14000 Towing
  • 2700 Max Payload
  • 15 cu ft frunk
500/229 = 2.18 mi/kWh

350/168 = 2.08 mi/kWh

This truck will be thirsty! Hopefully the pack is capable of 250kW+ charging else you will be spending a lot of time in a Walmart parking lot.

Didn't watch, sounds like the only stand out is a gigantic battery? That's all Ram could muster?

Yeah ours are so much better. Maybe they are giving real world numbers not some pristine, ideal case numbers we were fed. They said 250kW charging. 100 miles in 10 minutes

I like it, but something's not adding up.

For one thing, it looks really short/slammed. I think Andre is 6' and he's towering over the truck while the top of his head would roughly match top of the cab height against a Lightning. Maybe the air suspension is lowered but visually, it looks like the cab has been squished down compared to 'normal' trucks.

You know they added the Tungsten trim level because they expect it to be very expensive. More than the limited. This probably means $90K+ for the 168kWh and $110K+ for the 229kWh.

The GVWR of the Lightning is 8250lbs. For the RAM, it's going to 10K lbs at least if it's going to have that payload.

But it does address the weakest point of the Lightning, battery size, so we'll see if it's affordable.

Yup, this is the key. Right now, the number race is all about packing in more batteries and then have to worry about the added weight in every other aspect of design. With the current battery tech, if I need longer range, I am thinking about a more efficient design like Ioniq 6, model 3 or if I could afford it lucid. Until battery density has improved, RAM or Hummer is not enough of an upgrade. If I had to travel long distance and I had to do it with a truck, at this point I would be leaning toward Cybertruck (Smaller battery with better charging network). But I really hope charging improves by the time that is an option so I don't have to.

I think current generation of Lightning is unique because it was rushed not despite of it. The parts, design and tech is as accessible as it will ever be. With CT or anything next gen, it will likely become more of a black box that will increase our dependency to the company while the design choices to reduce manufacturing cost will lead to higher insurance for the owner.

I’ll tip my hat to Ram if they can build anything remotely affordable with a 229kwh battery on board. It seems like this is the way automakers will have to go for people to give up their ICE pickups, which is demonstrating that the truck can still drive several hundred miles with a trailer (even if most pickup drivers rarely or never actually do that)

From what I’ve read Tesla hasn’t introduced a 500 mile range car because most people don’t drive 500 miles without stopping, and more importantly there is diminishing efficiency returns when you start adding that much battery weight to a vehicle. Sounds like the Cybertruck was initially targeting 500 miles of range as well, so I’m curious to see what size battery they will put in it. It seems trucks are going to be pushing the limits of practicality as batteries get lighter, and fast charging (hopefully) gets cheaper, since $3/gallon gas is already on cost parity with a truck that gets 2 miles/kWh.

Either way, this is good news because I’m sure Ford will have to substantially bump the specs of the Lightning/T3 when it goes into production.

Can someone help me understand how the truck with the bigger battery pack (with more weight) will be more efficient than the smaller battery pack truck?

Smoke and mirrors to try get people to hold off and wait on an EV Truck purchase?
