What year is your rental Lightning?

I am near Port Angeles, so similar climate and driving conditions as your home conditions.

I traded my MME (resistance only heating) for a 2024 Lightning. The Lightning actually shows that it has a heart pump and a resistive heater if you look up the PIDs in CarScanner. The resistance heater in the Lightning rarely uses as much power as the MME heater did, and instead seems to just supplement the heat pump, averaging around 1-3 kW, and occasionally ramping up to 7-8 kW (similar to the MME), but only for a short amount of time, from my unscientific observations on CarScanner.

Just like my home heat pumps, the lightning takes much longer to feel warm. The MME resistance heat was instant, but used a ton of power.

I have found that setting a departure time or turning the climate on from FordPass really pays off in making the cabin warm. I also start my heat around 78-80 and slowly lower to 70-72 as I start to feel warmer.

I think what you are describing is just what the 2024 heat pump does.
