What year is your rental Lightning?

I am near Port Angeles, so similar climate and driving conditions as your home conditions.

I traded my MME (resistance only heating) for a 2024 Lightning. The Lightning actually shows that it has a heart pump and a resistive heater if you look up the PIDs in CarScanner. The resistance heater in the Lightning rarely uses as much power as the MME heater did, and instead seems to just supplement the heat pump, averaging around 1-3 kW, and occasionally ramping up to 7-8 kW (similar to the MME), but only for a short amount of time, from my unscientific observations on CarScanner.

Just like my home heat pumps, the lightning takes much longer to feel warm. The MME resistance heat was instant, but used a ton of power.

I have found that setting a departure time or turning the climate on from FordPass really pays off in making the cabin warm. I also start my heat around 78-80 and slowly lower to 70-72 as I start to feel warmer.

I think what you are describing is just what the 2024 heat pump does.

We have been getting into mid to low 30s and my 24 flash is doing fine so far. I run it on full auto and 70-75 range. It doesn’t warm up as fast as my old Mach E but it has been getting plenty warm.
You may want to bring it in to have the R1234yf refrigerant levels checked.
Also make sure your radiator up front is clear of all leafs/debris ensuring you are getting good air flow through it.
You can also go into the climate screen and make sure "heat" is enabled and also try enabling Driver Preference option to see if it helps.
Only thing I have noticed is the compressor does ramp up quite a lot in the colder weather, it’s audible and you can feel it in the pedals when it’s running full tilt. This may also be because of the secondary or larger compressor with the tow package not sure.

Make sure your cab recirculation is on. The truck will work hard trying to heat cold air.

Is there a way to keep recirc on when you restart the truck? Seems to me that it always defaults to off or I might be missing something..
It's a environmental safety setting, ala ICE vehicles CO purge cycle, when you manually turn it off it's only for fixed amount of time it'll reopen the circulation vent after a period of time, I don't recall exactly maybe 10-20 minutes?

Ah, just something I have to get used to then. My previous vehicle (Subaru Ascent) had physical buttons and it would retain the last setting so I was just curious. Lightning is my first 'all digital' vehicle so much to learn/get used to.

It used to stay on if air was directed only to the dash and you were not in “Auto” mode. IDK if that’s still the case or not.

I feel like the temperature settings can be a little confusing, at least on the large screen models. Just to make sure its not that, do you have it on "heat" and "driver focused"? You can turn it on there by touching the icon to the left of the passengers temp setting. If that doesn't help, it could be an actual issue. Good luck!

OP here. I checked the Lighnting rental I am using while traveling. It is indeed a 2024 XLT (2/24 build date), and has had no issues with HVAC. It is 40 degrees in the morning and 75 in the afternoon where I am at. No issues with either AC or Heat.

it sounds like I need to have the Ford dealer check out my ‘24 when I get back home.

I sent a DM. It would be great to know whether anyone else with a ‘24 is having a similar experience.
Hello, I have new 2024 Lariat model as well and noticed the same thing - slow to heat up the cabin.
Note: A heat pump, I believe, is more efficient but it does not produce hotter air so to speak. My experience with any head-pump is they take a while to raise ambient temp. I have to crank-up my fan to 5-7 to start getting floor heat to feel warm.

Eventually the cabin reaches a hot temp.

There are a number of suggestions I've read about pre-conditioning while your truck is plugged in to avoid wasting battery on cabin heat so I've recently started pre-heating 15 mins in advance.

NOTE: An odd issue I encounter is the dumb/buggy Ford charging software seems to want to randomly go into Charge 100% even though I have 90% max charge set everywhere and the truck had been at 90% when I start the pre-heating. I find the only way to keep the truck for charging randomly when it wants, sometimes to 100%, is for me never to have it plugged in once it's at 90%.

I deleted all location based charging profiles, etc and turned off automatic sw updates.

Thanks for the post :). My car heats a bit and then feels shivering cold. It’s weird. Now that I have had 4 days in a rental ‘24 without a similar experience, I am going to head home, and test. If I don’t get the same experience in my own Lightning, I am going to bring it to the dealer.

I would expect the heating experience to be the same unless the ‘24 rental XLT, for some reason has a different heating system than my Lariat (i.e., no heat pump). I just didn’t think that would be the case.

I find the only way to keep the truck for charging randomly when it wants, sometimes to 100%, is for me never to have it plugged in once it's at 90%.

I noticed that Fordpass will display a message concerning how much time to 100% while plugged in and running the climate / remote start cycle, that message is essentially a false statement.

My truck had already reached my charging goal of 90% previously at 7:24 am.

Then the truck sat quietly until I clicked the remote start 7:47, the "charging Status" display reappeared to say it would reach 100% by 8 somthing am about another hour, but the remote start is only for 15 minutes, or 30 if I extended it, but notice the power flow from 7:24 am to 8:02 am when I unplugged.

The reality is that the charge controller limits the amount of additional energy going to the HVB but does allow 'just enough' to maintain the heating cabin preparation process while on the grid connection. In the past I've never seen more that 1% 'extra' charging occur during this process.
