My truck is plugged in to the FCSP in an unheated garage and hasn’t been driven in two days. As with much of the country, NE Ohio has been very cold. I checked the app today and my truck was showing it was preconditioning for departure. There are no departure times set and have never been set for that time. Is it doing this to keep the battery at a certain temperature?

Yeah they try to avoid the battery getting too cold. I've noticed this twice today also with the temp in the 20's where it ran for about an hour and used 1kWh both times. When I checked the battery temp in CarScanner, it was showing the battery temp as 41F so a bit above freezing.

This is how much my truck used in past 24 hours to keep the battery warm in Maryland.

Come on over to this thread for a deep dive on the finer details of how spontaneous battery conditioning is occurring from my and few other members experiences.

Intentional cold soak -15

This morning my truck did a combination battery warming and charging session all wrapped into one activity. This morning It took an extra 5.6 kWh of energy to warm the battery to prepare it for accepting a charge.

Does anyone know at what battery temp, the conditioning kicks in? My battery was at 23F last night and still didn’t kick in. Once I woke up the truck, it started heating up the battery and this time it took 2KWh to get it to 41F(or May be 43F, I forgot the upper limit). In this occasion the conditioning had not come on for over 12 hours. It usual kicks in every 6-7 hours.

There may have been sufficient residual warmth from the prior session.

Do you ever touch the START & STOP button regarding controlling charging activity? I've noticed a bug with how it behaves, see todays post in the Cold Soak thread.

It is actually maintaining the battery temperature above 40 degrees if plugged in. I thought the same thing. So if cold (I park mine in a carport and today it was -4 degrees) the truck will attempt to maintain at least 40 degrees regularly. It will cost you about 30-40 minutes of house supplied power to the battery heaters a cold day.

Maybe it depends on software version/updates or something. My 23 XLT certainly does not maintain the battery above freezing. It's usually at ambient or a few degrees above if it was charged during the night.

Just tried to set a precondition time today before a departure. No Joy!! This has worked fine in past. I used a week or so ago.

My money is on an unannounced server communication issue.

perhaps - Mine is a 2024 Flash. and if plugged in it maintains the battery at or above 40 degrees.

Seems silly to not warm the battery if the vehicle is plugged in and it's cold outside no matter if or what the departure time is set to. My 23 XLT was plugged in and it was pulling current around midnight last night and, since it charged to the set point, I'm assuming it was to warm the battery.

There is a tech on the Mach E forum that I highly respect. He says that Ford’s strategy is that the heating will initiate at -4C and heat the battery to +5C when plugged in. So 25 to 41F. I’d guess it’s the same for the Lightning. I maintain my garage at 45F, so I’ll never find out.
