When he’s talking about the app, I believe that his problem is with the charge scheduling; since he has a Time of Use electricity plan where the price per kW is less late at night and he’s too lazy to just plug his truck in at midnight. In some areas the price of electricity late at night can be half to a third the cost or more of peak use prices.

Like everything else in the video it’s poorly explained but it sounds like he plugs into the charger when he arrives home but doesn’t schedule it to actually charge until later and sometimes it doesn’t charge at all during that time.

Though; since he’s talking about the slow ass charger, it’s not like he’s going to be saving that much money by waiting for the off peak pricing. Also, since he’s fine with charging off-peak only and apparently it’s not a huge deal to drive to work the next day without changing at all, he must not need the fast charger as much as he acts like in the beginning of the video. So it’s just more pear clutching on his part.

I've found that the preconditioning/departure schedule can cause the truck to ignore the scheduled charge time especially if the SOC is low enough that the truck thinks it won't reach desired target SOC in time, in this situation the truck will begin charging immediately.

I tinkered with my time frames after noticing this phenomena, got it tuned just right now, BUT I'm not in a TOU service area, so I have the luxury of placing the charge time frame where needed, which could be an issue for folks with narrow time frames for inexpensive energy

As it has been said already, click bait and 'rage baiting' generates significantly more user engagement. Simply posting this video here is doing exactly what the video creator wants, driving people to his video / page. He's making money off views, and we're helping. YouTube doesn't care if you agree with him, by clicking through on the video and commenting, YouTube sees increased engagement and shows it to more people (hence why it has so many views).

If you don't want 'rage bait' videos to go viral, don't share them, don't comment on them, and don't click through to watch them. By doing so, you've amplified his video to potentially reach new consumers who now have false impressions on the Lightning. As for why he's do this, being negative and making people angry generates significantly more engagement. The Lightning is the only EV truck being made in numbers, sure the Rivian is there but it lacks the brand recognition of Ford. So if you're a YouTuber trying to make a buck, you could make a Pro EV Video that won't do well, or you can make rage bait Lightning Videos to generate much more interest with the addition of potentially attracting new subscribers who don't like Ford, don't like EVs, etc would just want someone to reaffirm their opinion.

And yeah; he’s acting like a ninny for views. If anything, we want to convince people that nobody wants the Lightning so that the dealers start selling them at reasonable prices. So either way it doesn’t really matter, some dude on YT, where over half his views are probably kids without driver’s licenses or people who would buy the Lightning even if a scandal arose of them using the souls of redheaded stepchildren to manufacture the batteries came out; it really doesn’t matter either way.

It’s like I don’t own the same truck as him. Him saying you need to use the app to charge the car and all his charging issues? Besides the occasional anxiety about whether EA will be working I have almost none. I just plug in at home, chargepoint at work, or EA/EVGO if traveling, and if just charges.

Seriously, I don’t get it.

I watched it hoping to see a different perspective but it's basically garbage hit piece journalism. I literally had to turn it off because it was such a whiny garbage video.

I watched this video just a few moments ago.

1) The app is a pain at times, though it seems to be getting better.

2) He complains about charging. Well, he owned an EV before so he should have some idea of the logistical issues of it. I have never owned one before but have had good and bad experiences when on the few longer trips I've needed.

3) He is shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, that he LOST range in an EV going uphill to the mountains, AND that he lost more range when he left said EV outside in the cold. Who would have thunk it?

4) He is shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, to realize that he has to plan out charging stops. No freaking way! Sort of like needing to fuel up an ICE vehicle. That being said, I do agree that it is a pain in the backside to find some these tucked away chargers.

Makes me remember what my Drill Instructors told us....Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

It can be an adjustment getting used to an EV though.

Early EV adopters had similar fears and complaints about the Nissan Leaf - esp. what came to be known as the "guess-o-meter" range indicator. Apparently it was invented by a fan of Einstein's theory of relativity - sometimes we go through worm holes (generated by the EV?) and GAIN range after a trip.

I have a 2012 Leaf.

I can head out on a local trip to the grocery store with a starting range of 40 miles, but when I get home the range is 42 miles. What? I went back in time?

The range estimate varies with driving speed and technique, temperature, altitude, attitude, gravity's effect on space-time, too apparently, etc.

So, if I decide to drag race a Porsche or a crotch-rocket at a light (did that once and was ahead up to 40 mph, never exceeding the posted speed limit of course) I loose range. I enjoy the G-force, but miss the rubber left on the road and feel guilty about wasting electrons just for a cheap, very cheap (as low as 5.1 cents per KWH) thrill.

If I drive like a little old lady, NOT from Pasadena, coast through stop signs when safe, coast down a lot of hills applying the regenerating brakes just right, etc., I gain range.

The range indicator at first seemed like it was trying really hard to give me range anxiety - then I started ignoring it and muttering "yes dear, I know, thank you dear, now stop nagging!"

I know my Leaf's limits.
I plan out a charging schedule so I never go below 20% or above 80% charge.
I charge off-peak-demand at a lower cost.
I never stress the battery too much by using fast DC charging.
I don't even try to go on long trips with it.

I am one of those average regular guys who drives under 40 miles a day, so the Leaf works for me, except when I need to haul something big - then I need my Ford Ranger.

I really wish the Lightning had stayed at the promised MSRP, but it didn't so I bailed.

I might have bailed anyway when I heard about the battery and charging problems some significant minority of owners seem to be having.

Vehicles are now essentially computers with wheels.
As we used to say back in the early days of computers and software:
To err is human, but to really screw up, you need a computer.

It seems these days, software is not adequately tested and debugged, even in transportation vehicles where lives are at risk - consider the Boeing 737 Max.

So far no one has died in a Lightning, TG.
Did Ford rush the Lightning to market without doing rigorous enough testing?
A battery fire is a big deal, a very big deal.
Especially when it is just sitting there on a lot, not being fast charged or doing anything else that could stress the battery and risk failure.

As for the video, just like all the positive write-ups in trade magazines, car/truck of the year awards, and rave reviews on the Tube, the haters can be just as biased and unreliable.

For the most part, forums like this one are the best source of information I have found.

As a rule of thumb, negative videos have a better chance of going viral than positive ones.

He's done this before with a negative video about towing, but unlike channels like TFLTruck or State of Charge who use more objective testing methods, he seems to just shoot for click bait.

I'm going to shoot some new videos for two of my YouTube channels from the perspective of a real owner.

Although we vent some of our frustrations about quirks on these forums, I can say that this truck is the best vehicle I've ever owned, and by a wide margin.

I haven't posted new stuff in a while, but I'm definitely going to start posting on a regular basis soon. I've got two primary channels and I'm going to add a two new channels to I won't be flooding my main channels with unrelated subjects.

Unless I'm still doing it wrong, the frustrating thing for me is the inability to create scheduled departures. The issue is less about making sure the truck doesn't start charging until 9pm, for example, and more about the fact that it will then charge to the set point regardless of when I'm leaving. In other EVs I set it up to charge between 9pm and to end charging before 8am the next morning. I also tell it I'm leaving for work at 7:30am (and that I want 100% charge) and it'll start charging somewhere around 1am and finish at 7:29...or whatever the case may be. The F150L, in contrast, will charge itself to 100% and sit there from 1am until 7:30am when I finally leave.

Yup the 100% setting is a definite bug, if your drive cycle can tolerate 95%, then increment the start time to a point later in the evening each day to get it closer to the goal of finishing charging just in time for preconditioning to kick in and prepare for the drive.

His problem is he thinks Ford is like Tesla, and it's not. He's not wrong on a lot of things, with exceptions to him buying a cheap extension cord and not understanding that the app is not needed to charge. But until Ford wakes up and listens to it's consumers, it's best to plan out your trip using ABRP and Plugshare.

He is right about the app. It is ruining a great product. Of course, FordPass has been terrible since it launched about 7 years ago, so I wouldn't expect it to improve anytime soon. Same with the charging network and how it interfaces with the navigation. He keeps thinking it should act like Tesla, and it really should, but they have a closed system.
