I was on a forum board and someone recommended the NACS to CCS1 and the NACS to J1772 so I bought them both.

But if J1772 fits into a CCS1, do I really need both?

Yes. They serve two different purposes.

The NACS to CCS1 is for DC charging. The NACS to J1772 is for AC chargning.

The top one is for Tesla Super Chargers, bottom is Tesla AC Destination chargers. You can Google those terms to read about the differences.

I would have thought the Instruction Manuals would cover that but I don't own either one.

When would AC

Until you mentioned it, I was unfamiliar with what a Tesla destination charger was. I was only familiar with home chargers and DC fast chargers. Just had to google it. I am clearly quite new to the EV world and I do appreciate the insight.

Is an AC destination EVSE different from a home AC EVSE?

No, they are the same. 240V AC. Tesla used the word "destination" just to distinguish between them and Superchargers.

General comment on destination chargers: They can be set to "Tesla only" in which case they will only work with Tesla vehicles, or maybe a TeslaTap brand adapter (they claim to have some circuitry to bypass that check). There's no reliable way to tell in advance whether a regular adapter will work at a given spot. PlugShare reviews are your best bet. I don't know how common that setting is in the real world.

I admire the simplicity of the Tesla charging port. Two pins and they will recognize what power comes to them, and adjust to it. Those two pins can be exposed to 120v to 800v and no need to touch anything in the car.

No you don’t need them. Yes you will want both of them, with a caveat. The J1772 is only of value if you plan to charge somewhere with a destination charger from Tesla. Or are like me and wanted a good mobile charger for an amazing price, so I went with the Tesla one and I need the adaptor on the Lightning.

Technically the same is true for the NACS to CCS, it is a want not a need. That one may become a need depending on where you travel😉🙃

Lots of hotels have destination chargers and the J1772 can get you a full charge overnight, often on the hotel's dime. Have taken advantage of that on several occasions with multi-night stays and sightseeing trips in the area - already paid for itself 2 times over !!

I just got my Lectron NACS to J1772 adapter today. Waited until there was a sale, and I have the supercharger adapter already. I’ve been told that many, but not all Tesla destination chargers are free to use, and many, but not all, will allow non-Tesla vehicles to charge. There are a few places here in WV/VA that I frequent that I intend to test out - but for about $120, I figure it’s good to have on hand to snag some free electrons.

Huh?

I have not yet used my ford nacs adapter nor the destination charger.

I used my ford mobile adapter on a plain old wall outlet in my apt buildings garage. I used CP L2s, EvGo dcfc and L2s, EA dcfc, have Plug & Charge enabled. 95% of my charging is now at home in my garage.

I pop the door and just plug in.

i can’t think of anything I touch in my car or truck (have not used dcfc yet) to complete a charge. Occasionally I must reset the breaker for my evse.

When you visit your friends home and want to use their charger; you’ll need that NACS AC adapter if they own a Tesla.

Of course, if your Tesla friend visits you, he will already have an adapter to use your charger because Tesla includes one with the car. :)
