Is mine the only state that punishes folks for buying an EV?

Seems to me that a mileage driven each year would be a much fairer solution. I live in KY which is not EV friendly, to say the least and I drive about half the average driver so I’m paying much more than my ICE counterpart.

I’ve just had to chalk it up to the price I have to pay to fight climate change, corporate Oil and of course the fun of driving this awesome truck.
So you will pay by mile but the minimum annual fee for KY will be $160 per year. :curse:

For sure they will never leave anything on the table. They always want more not less and because of the accounting verification issue the minimum will probably rise to $250 to cover administrative and enforcement costs, since more government drones will be needed assure everyone pays their fair share.

GEORGIA is roughly $200 per year...
That seems to be the common number as I scroll through the posts for various states, I guess many lawmakers look around and see what everyone else is doing and follow suit. WV is also $200 per year.

I already pay 200 for my reg in PA because it's a truck, guess it's gonna be 400 now.

The numbers for me in Pennsylvania are interesting.

I’ve always had a pickup truck and use it about 6000 miles per year.
My previous 2015 F150 Lariat Ecoboost average 16.5 mpg over its 7 year stint with me. I reset Trip Odometer 1 the day I drove it home new from the dealer.
In PA, the tax on gasoline is 57.6¢ per gallon.
6000/16.5 X 0.576 = 209 annual
Proposed EV tax - 200 annual

I guess I can’t complain.

Right, it seems to add up to a reasonable amount, but not sure about the $50 added on to the second year of it...but, I'd like to see them switch to this for everyone and eliminate the gas tax entirely. The whining about it will be epic. There's always some joker with a weird situation that they think they are being treated super unfairly...."I live in Philly, but I commute to work in Jersey, and my girlfriend lives in Delaware, it's not fair that I gotta pay for PA roads I never use!!!"

Tax fraud is a crime against your fellow tax payers. Kind of disgusting that you brag about it.
Take it as you will. I think it's despicable that the state of Ohio wants to punish EV drivers with extra fees. I think we have enough problems to contend with as EV drivers without paying more. I suppose it's all about what you consider to be more problematic, my friend. You go ahead and pay all you want, I won't stop you.

A lot of states do that to compensate for the lost gas taxes. It’s supposed to go to road maintenance and as long as it does I’m OK with it. You used to pay $0.28 to Alabama for every gallon of gas so just remember that every time you plug your truck in.
Illinois plates go up a hundred I was told from 151 to 251

I don't mind paying the 'road tax' fee, as most of us have done for years and years with 'regular' vehicles that take it from us at every gas station stop... but, I don't like that it is a SINGLE payment, all at once, when I register my tag each year, which is a REQUIREMENT, whether I drive 2 miles per year, or 20,000 miles per year... we don't have a 'pay as you drive' ability that you have at gas stations, like everyone else.

I also do find it interesting that while states may 'promote' EVs and their 'green' efficiencies, they then turn around and try to implement all the same 'gas vehicle' requirements on those same vehicles. Leaving 'road taxes' to the gas and diesel vehicles would give more folks a 'reason' to move toward EVs... but, states and local jurisdictions and committees don't always 'see' things the way they are.

All this talk about what is fair...good thoughts from good people, but not necessarily realistic.

Do we believe that "leaders", any of them, are motivated by what is fair and best for the most people? Or are they motivated to make financial arrangements with organizations that give them bribes perfectly legal campaign contributions in the expectation that policies will be made to favor the donors rather than us ordinary folks?

Also, an interesting map showing the distribution of EV fees and/or incentives around the US last year:

sw engineering manager,
Roads have to get paid for somehow.
I agree it should be per mile kind of thing to encourage people to have the smallest possible footprint. But the logistics of measuring your mileage make it tough and the cost of implementing that might be too inefficient of a way to have people pay their fair share.

Additionally, it should be weight based since larger vehicles wear down the road faster.

I just picked up a 24 Flash and I live in Wisconsin. Ill have to register it soon and was looking at the title form and noticed that the GVWR of my truck is 8450lbs which classifies it as a heavy truck(8-10k lbs). Then I see the EV/Hybrid surcharge($175) for those EV/Hybrid vehicles registered at 8000lbs or less. If I follow those instructions I shouldnt have to pay the EV surcharge. Granted Ill pay more for the plate fee for a heavy truck($106 vs $155).

Virginia robs EV owners, I pay $128 per year in HUF (Highway Use Fees), I own 4 EV's and pay $512 per year on top of registration, annual county and city property tax, and ridiculous HOT lane tolls.

Virginia HUF Robbery Chart

I have trained my kids to call it the Taliban Road Tax. My Lightning on a good day gets about 60 eMPG, but I get charged like it's getting 128 eMPG....

An easy way to fix this is to just tax tires more... the more miles you drive the more the Taliban collect..

Texas rewards us by charging a new annual $200 per EV fee. Should be based on miles driven per year, which they have via the annual safety inspection process and could bill with annual registration. @ 15mpg, you've got to drive 8,000 miles to pay that much road tax. Plus 8.25% sales tax on electricity

New Jersey was OK for EVs. Now with the tax incentives gone (no sales tax), and with the increased registration costs… it’s not going to help the whole EV moment.
